Chapter 6 - The Trust

The Hawthorne trust document was 146 pages long.
Jason read it twice.
Rachel needed only one paragraph.
"Read it again," she said.
Mia sat across the dining table with her laptop open.
Jason rubbed his eyes. "When the first grandchild born to a direct heir is a daughter, a block of family voting shares transfers into a protected trust for the child. Until she's eighteen, the child's legal guardian controls the proxy vote."
Rachel stared at him.
"Meaning me."
"Meaning the legal guardian," he said carefully.
"Which would normally be me and you."
"Yes."
Mia swore softly.
The Hawthorne family company was worth hundreds of millions. Vanessa currently held enough voting control to dominate the board.
Rachel's daughter would change that.
"So she stole my medical records because she needed to know the baby's sex," Rachel said.
Jason nodded.
"And once she knew it was a girl..."
Mia finished the thought. "Mom realized Rachel would get a vote big enough to challenge her."
Rachel felt sick.
"That sounds insane."
"It is insane," Jason said. "It can also be true."
Detective Castillo had left an hour earlier to obtain more records. Grant had been released after questioning, but his phone had been taken under warrant.
Rachel pushed the trust away.
"What was Plan A?"
Jason did not answer.
"Jason."
He looked at her.
"If someone built a fake medical record saying you were unstable..."
"They could use it against me."
"Maybe in a custody fight. Maybe to challenge your role as guardian."
Rachel stood too fast.
"Your mother planned to take my baby."
Jason rose. "We don't know that yet."
"Stop saying that."
He flinched.
Rachel's eyes filled, but her voice stayed sharp.
"Yesterday you didn't know she would push me into a pool. Last month you didn't know she was stealing my records. At what point do we stop giving her the benefit of the doubt?"
Jason looked away.
Mia quietly said, "Now."
A notification appeared on her laptop.
She frowned.
"What is it?" Rachel asked.
Mia turned the screen around.
A financial report from the Hawthorne Foundation had just been anonymously sent to her email.
Three million dollars had vanished over four years.
Every transfer had been approved by Vanessa.
And countersigned by Grant Bell.
