Chapter 18 - The Truth in Court

Sophie did not attend.

Adrian refused to make her watch adults argue about whether her fear had been real.

The prosecution played the pool footage first.

Vanessa throwing Teddy.

Sophie reaching.

Vanessa's foot moving.

Sophie falling into the water.

Adrian had seen it before.

It still made his hands shake.

Then came Claire's recordings.

The warehouse logs.

The diagnostic device.

The messages.

Finally, the foundation camera confession.

Vanessa's own voice filled the courtroom:

"She was supposed to stop."

Her lawyer closed his eyes.

Thomas looked at the floor.

Vanessa was convicted on charges tied to the assault on Sophie, conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, and obstruction.

Thomas was convicted on conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, and charges connected to Claire's death.

Graham's sentence reflected his cooperation but still meant years in prison.

Nolan received a reduced sentence.

Evelyn was not charged in Claire's death, but she pleaded guilty to financial concealment and resigned from every family board.

Outside court, reporters shouted.

Adrian ignored them.

Rachel waited with Sophie in a quiet room across the street.

When he entered, Sophie ran to him.

"Is it over?"

He hugged her.

"The court part is."

"Is Vanessa coming home?"

"No."

"Ever?"

"No."

Sophie exhaled like she had been holding that breath for months.

Then she handed him Teddy.

The bear had a new seam.

"Maria fixed him."

"He looks good."

Sophie smiled.

"Mommy would like that."

Adrian sat beside her.

"Yes."

Rachel watched him.

"You know there's one more thing."

Adrian frowned.

Daniel entered carrying a sealed envelope.

It had been found inside the master ledger's waterproof wrapping.

Claire's handwriting covered the front.

FOR ADRIAN - AFTER THE TRUTH.

Adrian stared at it.

He had spent months wanting answers.

Now he was afraid to open the last one.

Sophie nudged him.

"Daddy."

He looked at her.

"Mommy wanted you to read it."

He opened the envelope.
