Chapter 19 - Claire's Last Letter

Adrian read aloud.
"Adrian, if Sophie is beside you when you read this, then the most important part of my plan worked.
You protected her.
Maybe not perfectly. Neither of us ever did anything perfectly.
But you came back to her."
Adrian had to stop.
Sophie leaned against him.
He continued.
"I know you will blame yourself for not seeing what I saw. Don't turn regret into another prison. I hid things because I was scared, and because I kept telling myself I needed one more piece of proof.
We both waited too long to tell each other the truth.
So here is the last truth I can give you:
Vanessa did not take my life because she was stronger than me.
She took advantage of the fact that frightened people become easier to isolate.
Do not let Sophie grow up believing love means silence.
Believe her when she speaks.
Apologize when you are wrong.
And let her keep that ridiculous bear until she is eighty."
Sophie laughed through tears.
Adrian did too.
The letter ended:
"Take her somewhere loud and ordinary.
Buy bad ice cream.
Let her get grass on expensive clothes.
A safe life is not a locked life.
I love you both.
Claire."
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Sophie said, "Can we get bad ice cream?"
Adrian laughed.
"Absolutely."
Evelyn moved into a smaller home and began the long, uncomfortable work of rebuilding trust with Sophie.
Some days Sophie hugged her.
Some days she didn't.
No one forced her.
One Saturday, Adrian and Sophie returned to the memorial garden.
Teddy sat under Sophie's arm.
She placed a small paper flower beside Claire's bronze bear.
"Mommy won."
Adrian knelt beside her.
"I think you did."
Sophie shook her head.
"We all did."
Then she pointed toward the house.
A moving truck had arrived.
Adrian frowned.
"I didn't schedule that."
A man stepped out carrying a box.
Daniel.
He smiled.
"Before you panic, it's evidence being returned."
"What evidence?"
Daniel lifted a small metal lockbox.
"Property recovered from Thomas."
Adrian's pulse quickened.
"What's inside?"
Daniel looked at Sophie.
"Something Claire never listed in any inventory."
They opened it in the study.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
On top was one image of Claire holding Teddy.
Behind her stood a woman Adrian had never seen.
On the back, Claire had written:
IF VANESSA IS CAUGHT, FIND ELENA.
Adrian looked at Rachel.
"Who is Elena?"
Rachel's face went pale.
"My sister."
Adrian stared.
"You have another sister?"
Rachel whispered:
May you like
"We did."
And suddenly, the story Claire left behind had one final door.
