Chapter 20 - Home

Elena Bennett was alive.

She had not been missing.

She had been hiding.

Claire and Rachel's younger half-sister had worked as an accountant for Graham's first shell company. When she discovered suspicious transfers, Graham threatened her.

Claire helped her disappear under a new name.

After Vanessa, Thomas, and Graham were convicted, Elena finally contacted federal investigators.

Her testimony uncovered the last accounts and returned millions to victims beyond the Cole family.

For Adrian, the revelation mattered for another reason.

It proved Claire's fight had never been only about money.

She had been trying to protect people.

A year after the pool incident, Sophie stood beside Adrian in the same backyard.

The pool was still there.

Adrian had considered filling it in.

Sophie refused.

"I like swimming."

He looked at her carefully.

"You're sure?"

She nodded.

"Vanessa doesn't get to own the pool."

That sentence stayed with him.

So he hired an instructor.

He learned CPR again.

He sat by the water during every lesson until Sophie told him he was being annoying.

That was the day he knew she was healing.

She swam to the edge and splashed him.

"Stop staring, Dad."

"I'm supervising."

"You're worrying."

"That too."

She grinned.

Teddy sat safely on a chair beneath an umbrella.

His seams had been repaired again.

Rachel arrived carrying lemonade.

Maria brought sandwiches.

Even Evelyn came later, waiting at the gate until Sophie waved her in.

As the sun dropped behind the trees, Sophie climbed out of the pool and wrapped herself in a towel.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you think Mommy can see us?"

Adrian looked toward the memorial garden.

"I don't know."

Sophie thought about that.

"I think she can."

"Why?"

"Because her plan worked."

He smiled.

Sophie picked up Teddy.

The bear was old, faded, and worth nothing to anyone who measured value in money.

But inside that bear, Claire had hidden a key.

And that key had opened more than a safe deposit box.

It had opened the truth.

Adrian took Sophie's hand as they walked toward the house.

Behind them, the pool water went still.

No secrets beneath it.

No one watching from the shadows.

No one waiting to take what belonged to a child.

Just reflected light.

May you like

Home.

And for the first time since Claire died, that word felt true.
