The Boy Was Pushed on the Marble Stairs—And One Folder Changed Everything

Leo was not kidnapped.

That was the first good news.

The bad news was that he had left Claire’s farmhouse on purpose.

Maya found his note beneath the blue box.

Dad,

Everybody keeps fighting because of me. I’m going to fix it.

Julian read the photograph of the note on his phone while crouched behind a concrete pillar in the depot.

“Fix it how?” he shouted into the earpiece.

Maya’s voice shook. “He took Charles’s old phone.”

Charles came on the line. “It has one number saved under A.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Adrian?”

“Adrian’s mother. Evelyn Cross.”

Grant heard the name.

His expression changed.

Julian saw it.

“Your sister-in-law,” Julian said.

Grant’s smile vanished.

Eleanor looked between them. “What?”

Julian understood before anyone said it.

Adrian’s mother was still alive.

And if Evelyn controlled part of the Cross estate, Grant’s authority was not absolute.

Grant raised his gun.

“You should have handed me the drive.”

Federal agents stormed the west entrance.

Chaos exploded.

Eleanor screamed and dropped to the floor.

Grant ran through a service door.

Julian chased him outside but lost him among abandoned rail cars.

By 1:30 p.m., Rebecca and the security officer had been rescued from a nearby warehouse.

Eleanor was in federal custody.

But Grant was gone.

And so was Leo.

Then Julian received a call.

“Mr. Mercer?” an elderly woman said.

“Yes.”

“My name is Evelyn Cross.”

Julian’s knees almost gave out.

“Is Leo with you?”

“He is.”

“Put him on.”

“In a moment.”

“Now.”

Evelyn’s voice became sharp. “Your father stole from my family. My brother-in-law is willing to hurt a child to hide it. Your wife just tried to seize that child’s trust. I will not hand Leo over until I know which adult in his life can be trusted.”

Julian gripped the phone.

“I am his father.”

“Then prove it.”

The call ended.

A text arrived with an address.
