Chapter 4 - The Key

The key fit nothing in Julian’s office.

Not the desk.

Not the wall safe.

Not the private file cabinet.

By two in the morning, Julian had opened every locked compartment in the room.

Maya stood by the shelves while Leo slept on the sofa under a blanket, refusing to be alone upstairs.

“What happens when he turns twelve?” Maya asked.

Julian looked at his son.

“In five weeks, Leo becomes a co-beneficiary with limited review rights. He can’t spend the money, but his guardian can no longer amend administrative terms without an independent trustee.”

“So Eleanor had five weeks.”

“Yes.”

Leo opened his eyes.

“You’re talking about me like I’m asleep.”

Julian sat beside him. “Sorry.”

Leo pushed himself up. “Mom used to have a little blue box.”

Julian stared. “What box?”

“She called it the rainy-day box.”

“You remember that?”

“I remember the song.”

“What song?”

Leo hummed three notes.

Maya looked toward the antique music cabinet on the far wall.

Julian did too.

Amelia had loved old mechanical music boxes. After she died, Julian had locked most of them away because the sound hurt too much.

He crossed the room and opened the cabinet.

On the bottom shelf sat a blue lacquered box.

The brass key slid into its lock.

Click.

Inside was not jewelry.

It was a flash drive, a handwritten letter, and a photograph of Amelia standing beside a woman Julian had never seen.

Leo whispered, “That’s Mom.”

Julian picked up the letter.

His name was not on it.

LEO - OPEN WITH DAD WHEN YOU TURN TWELVE.

He hesitated.

Leo looked at him. “Open it.”

“It says when you turn twelve.”

“She also probably didn’t expect someone to push me down the stairs.”

Julian almost smiled despite everything.

He opened the envelope.

The letter began simply:

Leo,

If you are reading this early, then something has gone wrong.

Julian stopped.

Maya leaned closer.

He continued.

Do not assume the person trying to take your trust is after the money.

The money is only the door.

Behind it is proof.

Julian looked at the flash drive.

“What proof?” Maya whispered.

The office lights suddenly went out.

Leo grabbed Julian’s sleeve.

“Dad?”

A second later, glass shattered somewhere downstairs.

Then the security alarm died.
