Chapter 14 - Evelyn Cross
Evelyn lived in a brownstone overlooking the Hudson.
Julian brought Charles because refusing felt more dangerous than agreeing.
Leo opened the door himself.
Julian grabbed him and held him so tightly Leo complained he couldn’t breathe.
“Good,” Julian said. “That means you’re staying right here.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You left without telling anyone.”
“I had to call her.”
“You never have to disappear to solve adult problems.”
Leo looked down.
Julian softened. “I’m angry because I was scared.”
Evelyn entered the room.
She was seventy, elegant, and looked at Charles with open hatred.
“You.”
Charles lowered his eyes. “Evelyn.”
“You let my son’s name disappear from his own child’s life.”
“Amelia asked me to.”
“After you threatened her.”
Julian turned. “Threatened?”
Charles said nothing.
Evelyn laughed bitterly. “There it is. The Mercer silence.”
She opened a safe and removed a sealed packet.
“Adrian knew Amelia was pregnant. He was unstable, addicted, and afraid he would hurt them. He signed away his rights voluntarily.”
Leo listened without blinking.
“He got sober,” Evelyn continued. “Then he died in a boating accident before he could ask to meet you.”
Julian looked at Leo.
Leo whispered, “Was it really an accident?”
Evelyn’s face hardened. “I don’t know anymore.”
She handed Julian the packet.
Inside was the original Cross trust agreement.
On page nine was a clause nobody in Julian’s version had ever seen.
If fraud was discovered, all disputed assets would transfer temporarily to an independent public trust pending investigation.
Nobody—not Julian, not Leo, not Grant—could touch the money.
Julian almost laughed from relief.
“This ends it.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “It starts it.”
She placed a second document on the table.
It was a recent petition filed in family court.
PETITION FOR EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP OF LEO MERCER.
The petitioner was Eleanor Mercer.
Filed forty-eight hours earlier.
