Chapter 15 - Under Voss's House

Calvin locked the library door and pulled a knife.
Emilio did not move.
Leon Voss remained behind the desk, calm enough to be insulting.
"You still think this is about money," Voss said.
"My daughter is tied up somewhere in your house."
"She's leverage."
"That answer is going to age badly."
The lights went out.
A crash came from the hallway.
Then Marcus's voice: "Emilio!"
Calvin turned.
Emilio hit him with the brass lamp.
The knife skidded away.
Marcus kicked the door open, blood running down one side of his face.
"You're alive."
"Be disappointed later."
Voss slipped behind a hidden wall panel.
They chased him down stone stairs into a basement built like a private command center.
Two locked rooms sat at the end.
Ava screamed from the first.
Emilio broke the door and caught her as she launched into his arms.
"I knew you'd come."
Elena was in the second room, bruised but alive.
Federal agents flooded the basement.
Calvin was cuffed upstairs.
But Voss had escaped through a tunnel beneath the cliff.
Mara called from outside.
"We figured out the red key."
"It opens Lucia's old office at Vega Tower."
"Why would Voss want it?"
"Because the original trust ledger is hidden there. If he destroys it, he can replace it with the forged amendment."
Ava wiped her face.
"The old man said Mommy's office was going to burn."
Emilio checked the time.
12:38 a.m.

"When?"
Ava whispered, "At one."
