Chapter 5 - Lucia Knew First

Mara got the petition frozen before midnight.
That did not make Emilio feel safer.
It made him understand how close they had been.
Nolan allowed Ava to leave with Emilio after hotel footage from the main corridor showed Tessa dragging the girl toward the service area. The critical interior feed had been erased, but not every camera had belonged to Rowan.
By one in the morning, Emilio, Ava, Marcus, and Mara were inside a secure guesthouse on a property owned through a company Calvin didn't know existed.
Ava slept in Emilio's arms.
She refused to let go of his shirt.
Mara sat across from him at the kitchen table.
"We need to talk about Lucia."
Emilio looked down.
His wife's name still had edges.
"What about her?"
"The red key."
Marcus set it on the table.
Under brighter light, they saw tiny engraved numbers along one side.
217-B.
Mara searched the sequence.
"Safe-deposit box."
"Where?"
"Pacific Meridian Bank. Beverly Hills branch."
Emilio frowned. "Lucia never banked there."
"Apparently she did."
At nine the next morning, Mara obtained emergency access as Lucia's surviving spouse.
The manager led them into a private vault.
Box 217-B was small.
Inside sat one envelope, one flash drive, and a photograph.
The photograph showed Lucia standing beside Rowan Price.
Behind them was Calvin.
The date printed on the back was five weeks before Lucia died.
Emilio felt sick.
He plugged the drive into Mara's offline laptop.
One video file appeared.
Lucia filled the screen.
Her hair was tied back. No makeup. She looked exhausted.
"Emilio," she began, "if you're watching this, I failed to stop them quietly."
He stopped breathing.
Lucia continued.
"Calvin has been moving money out of the family holding company through vendors that don't exist. Rowan is helping him bury the transfers."
Mara whispered, "Jesus."
"But the money isn't the worst part," Lucia said.
Emilio leaned closer.
"They found a clause in Ava's trust that becomes active if both parents are dead or legally incapacitated. The guardian controls voting rights until Ava turns twenty-five."
Emilio's hands curled into fists.
Lucia looked straight into the camera.
"If they can't get to the trust through me, they will come through you."
Then she glanced toward something offscreen.
Her face changed.
"There's someone else involved. Someone you love."
The recording crackled.
Lucia reached for the camera.
"If anything happens to me, do not trust-"
The video cut to black.
Emilio stared at the frozen screen.
Then Mara opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of Lucia's autopsy.

THEY CHANGED THIS.
