Chapter 19 - What Rafael Chose

Rafael did not deny the signature.
"I signed it after Lucia came to me," he said.
"You didn't believe her."
"No."
"But you prepared for her to be right."
"I was a coward in two directions."
Emilio said nothing.
Rafael pushed a second document across the table.
It was new.
A petition to dissolve Ava's controlling trust, convert her inheritance into diversified protected assets, and move company voting power into an independent public-benefit structure.
"You're giving up family control," Emilio said.
"I'm ending the reason people hunted a child."
For once, Emilio had no argument.
The criminal cases moved quickly.
Rowan pleaded guilty to Lucia's murder and conspiracy.
Preston lost his medical license and received a federal sentence.
Calvin testified against Voss and Shaw, reducing his punishment but not escaping prison.
Tessa pleaded guilty to kidnapping, child endangerment, obstruction, and conspiracy.
At sentencing, she looked toward Emilio.
He looked away.
Ava attended none of it.
She went to school.
She learned to swim without panicking.
She saw a therapist who never forced her to speak.
One afternoon, Ava reached into Bunny and handed Emilio a folded note.
"I forgot this."
Lucia's handwriting covered the page.
Most of it was for Ava.
At the bottom was one line for Emilio.
HE WILL BLAME HIMSELF. DO NOT LET HIM.
His eyes filled.
Ava climbed into his lap.
"Mommy knew you."
"Yeah."
He turned the note over.
One final sentence was written there.
CHOOSE HOME OVER EMPIRE.
Emilio read it twice.
Then his phone rang.
It was the board.
They wanted to know whether he would fight Rafael's plan.
Emilio looked at Ava.
May you like
"No," he said.
And for the first time in his adult life, he walked away from power without looking back.
