Chapter 18 - The Man Behind the Dead Man

Rafael survived because he had stepped out of the SUV moments before the blast.
By sunrise, Rowan was talking.
So was Preston.
Calvin asked for a deal.
Tessa asked for a lawyer.
All roads led to Leon Voss.
Then the news broke.
Voss had died in a private-plane crash.
Emilio stared at the television.
"No."
Mara looked at him. "Dental records confirmed him."
"That's exactly how people like him disappear."
Lucia had already taught him not to trust convenient deaths.
Federal agents searched Voss's files and found payments to a senior official inside the contracting system.
A code name appeared repeatedly.
NORTH.
Pike went silent.
"What?" Emilio asked.
"My boss uses that call sign."
Deputy Director Warren Shaw had personally closed two old investigations into Voss.
Pike turned over his badge rather than warn him.
Hours later, they found the real Voss at a private cargo terminal preparing to leave the country with Shaw.
Shaw pulled a gun.
Pike shot him in the leg.
Voss stopped only when Emilio held up Lucia's ledger.
"You publish that," Voss said, "and your company collapses."
"Maybe."
"Your daughter loses billions."
Emilio looked at him.
"That's the part you never understood."
"What?"
"Ava doesn't need your empire."
He handed the ledger to Pike.
"She needs the truth."
Agents cuffed Voss.
For the first time, the old lawyer looked afraid.
But as he was led away, he smiled at Emilio.
"You still haven't read the last page."
That night Emilio opened the ledger again.
The final entry was not a payment.
It was a legal instruction signed by Rafael.
DISSOLVE THE VEGA FAMILY TRUST UPON PUBLIC DISCLOSURE.
May you like
Emilio looked up.
His father had known the empire might have to die.
