Chapter 10 - The Clinic

By evening, Dr. Patel's office had become a crime scene of passwords, logs, and uncomfortable questions.
The burner phone had texted a number belonging to a medical assistant named Paige Lowell.
Paige had worked at the clinic for four years.
She had access to patient portals.
She had access to appointment notes.
And she had recently received three unexplained deposits totaling eighteen thousand dollars.
When police brought her in, she denied knowing Evelyn.
Then Ortiz showed her the bank transfers.
Paige asked for a lawyer.
That was enough for Dr. Patel to start an internal audit.
By midnight, they knew Claire's portal had been reset from a clinic workstation. The emergency contact had been changed from Adrian to Evelyn. Two notes had been added to Claire's chart describing "paranoid ideation" and "resistance to family support."
Dr. Patel stared at the screen in disbelief.
"I did not write these."
Claire whispered, "But they look like medical records."
"They were meant to."
Adrian felt something inside him harden.
This was not a difficult mother.
This was organized.
Ortiz called again.
"We found Marcus."
"Alive?"
"Yes. Motel outside Kenosha. He tried to run."
"Is he talking?"
"A lot. Mostly because he thinks Evelyn will leave him holding the bag."
Adrian stepped into the hall.
"What did he say?"
"He says she planned this for months."
"Why?"
"Company control. Money. And something else."
Adrian waited.
"Your mother believed Claire was going to convince you to sell the lake house and move the family office out of Illinois."
"That's not a crime."
"No. But according to Marcus, the lake house contains records Evelyn doesn't want moved."
Adrian frowned.
The Vale lake house in Lake Geneva had belonged to his father. Evelyn used it rarely.
"What records?"
"Marcus says he never saw them. Only that Evelyn told him, quote, 'If Adrian opens the old safe, everything his father protected me from will come back.'"
Adrian stopped breathing.
His father had been dead eleven years.
Claire watched him from the doorway.
"What is it?"
May you like
He looked at her.
"Apparently this started before you ever met me.
