Chapter 17 - The Birth

Everything after that moved too fast.
Claire was rushed into labor and delivery.
Adrian changed into scrubs with shaking hands.
The contractions were real now, hard and close together.
Claire gripped the bed rail and cursed him with impressive creativity every time he told her to breathe.
"If you tell me to breathe one more time, I will divorce you before this baby has a birth certificate."
"Understood."
"And don't smile."
"Not smiling."
"You are absolutely smiling."
For the first time in days, fear cracked enough to let something human through.
Hours later, just after sunrise, their son arrived.
Six pounds, four ounces.
Furious lungs.
Dark hair.
Perfect fingers.
Claire cried before the nurse even placed him on her chest.
Adrian did too.
They named him James Thomas Vale, after Claire's father and Adrian's late grandfather.
For thirty minutes, the world shrank to three people.
Then Ruth entered.
Her face destroyed the peace before she said a word.
"What happened?" Adrian asked.
"Evelyn filed the guardianship petition at 5:42 this morning."
Claire stared at her.
"While I was in labor?"
"Her lawyers filed electronically."
"On what grounds?"
"That you were admitted after repeated episodes of emotional instability and that Adrian is compromised by criminal and corporate investigations."
Adrian stood. "The evidence against her is with police."
"I know. The petition may fail. But she got an emergency hearing scheduled for this afternoon."
Claire looked down at James.
"She is still doing this."
Ruth sat beside the bed.
"Then we finish it."
At the hearing, Evelyn appeared by video from a conference room with counsel.
She looked composed again.
The judge asked why she believed Claire was unfit.
Evelyn began listing the manufactured record.
Ruth waited.
Then she played the audio from the storage unit.
If Claire leaves before the baby is born, the plan collapses.
Once the petition is filed, I only need seventy-two hours.
The judge's expression changed.
Evelyn's lawyer turned toward her in disbelief.
Ruth continued with clinic logs, medication evidence, forged signatures, and the trust amendment.
Evelyn's case collapsed in less than twenty minutes.
Then the judge asked one final question.
"Mrs. Evelyn Vale, did you knowingly provide medication to Claire Vale without her physician's authorization?"
Evelyn stared at the camera.
Her lawyer whispered urgently.
Evelyn ignored him.
"Yes," she said.

The room went silent.
Then she added, "But I did it because my son was too weak to protect his own family.
