Chapter 18 - No More Protection
That sentence ended Evelyn's power more completely than any court order could.
Not because it was the worst thing she had done.
Because it was the first time she said the quiet part aloud in front of everyone.
Adrian had been raised inside that word.
Protection.
Evelyn protected the family by hiding debt.
Protected the company by collecting secrets.
Protected Adrian by deciding which truths he was allowed to know.
Protected Claire by taking away her choices.
Protected the baby by trying to control his inheritance before he took his first breath.
The judge denied the petition, issued temporary protective orders, and referred the record to prosecutors.
Outside the hearing room, Adrian stood beside a window while James slept against his chest.
Claire joined him slowly.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Me neither."
He looked at her. "I owe you more than an apology."
"Yes."
He almost flinched.
Claire's mouth softened. "I don't need you to punish yourself forever, Adrian. I need you to change things while you still can."
He nodded.
The first change happened that afternoon.
He resigned as chairman of the Vale Family Foundation and ordered an independent forensic audit.
The second happened the next morning.
He asked Vale Meridian's board to appoint outside counsel to investigate every allegation in Evelyn's files, including the settlement Adrian himself had signed.
Noah stared at him. "That could cost you your job."
"Then it costs me my job."
The third change was quieter.
He told Ruth to prepare the lake house for sale and the family office for relocation.
Claire looked surprised.
"You love that place."
"I love what I thought it was."
Three days later, Detective Ortiz called.
"We charged Marcus with conspiracy, unlawful access, and evidence tampering. Paige is cooperating."
"And Evelyn?"
"Charges are coming."
Adrian exhaled.
Ortiz was not finished.
"There is something else."
"What now?"
"We searched Evelyn's apartment."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"And?"
"We found a sealed letter addressed to Claire."
