Chapter 11 - The Confession on the Ceiling

Helena looked up at the nearest speaker.
For half a second, her confidence broke.
That was enough.
Clara drove her elbow backward. Helena’s grip loosened. Victor crossed the distance and pulled Clara behind him as two security officers entered from the side door.
Helena dropped the knife.
“Do you think a recording saves you?” she asked.
“No,” Victor said. “It saves the truth.”
Police arrested her within minutes.
But Marcus’s recording had captured only part of the confession. Helena admitted using Serena and manipulating Ethan’s care. She never clearly admitted killing Naomi.
Victor wanted more.
Daniel, still hospitalized, finally told them what he knew.
“Naomi found the foundation transfers,” he said. “Helena ordered me to approve them. When I refused, she threatened my family. I kept copies and tried to warn Naomi.”
“Why didn’t you warn me?” Victor demanded.
Daniel looked ashamed. “Because Helena had proof I had signed the first false invoice. I thought if you knew, I’d lose everything.”
“So you let my wife keep driving around while you suspected her car had been tampered with?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Victor walked away from the bed.
Clara followed him into the hall.
“You can be angry,” she said.
“I am.”
“But don’t let anger make you stop listening.”
Victor looked at her.
“That’s what I did to you.”
Clara’s face tightened.
He continued, “I walked into that foyer, saw my son in your arms, and believed the person with the better clothes.”
“You believed the person you wanted to believe.”
“Yes.”
He did not ask her to forgive him.
That mattered.
Marcus called from the mansion.
“We found something in Helena’s basement records.”
“What?”
“A storage locker Naomi rented two days before she died.”
Victor went still.
“It’s still paid through an automatic account.”
Inside the locker they found one metal case.
The combination was Ethan’s birthday.
Victor opened it.
On top lay a letter addressed to him.
