Chapter 12 - Naomi’s Last File

Victor could not bring himself to open the letter first.

He handed the flash drive to Marcus.

The files contained months of Naomi’s private investigation.

Invoices. Bank transfers. Photographs. Audio recordings.

And one video filmed inside Helena’s office.

Naomi’s voice came from behind the camera.

“You’re stealing from children.”

Helena answered, “I’m moving money where the family can use it.”

“It’s a medical foundation.”

“It’s Blackwood money.”

Then came the line that changed the room.

Helena said, “If you take this to Victor, you’ll regret getting in that car tomorrow.”

Victor shut his eyes.

Marcus paused the video.

“That’s enough for prosecutors to reopen the crash.”

Clara looked at the unopened letter.

“You should read it.”

Victor finally did.

Naomi had written only three pages.

She apologized for keeping secrets. She explained that she feared Victor would confront Helena before the evidence was safe. She wrote that Serena’s father had helped move money, but Serena herself might not understand the full scheme.

The final paragraph was about Ethan.

If anything happens to me, do not let fear turn our son into a prisoner. Let him love people. Let him trust. And please, Victor, learn to trust the people who tell you the truth even when the truth hurts.

Victor stopped reading.

Clara looked away to give him privacy.

His phone rang.

It was the county prosecutor.

Helena was requesting a deal.

She would confess to financial crimes and child endangerment.

In exchange, she wanted immunity in Naomi’s death.

Victor’s voice became flat.

“No.”

The prosecutor said, “There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Helena says Serena can prove who actually cut Naomi’s brake line.”
