Victor had not spoken to his older sister, Helena Blackwood, in nearly three years.

She had left the family company after a violent board fight with Naomi over foundation spending.

Victor had assumed Helena moved to London.

Marcus discovered she had returned to the city six months ago.

Quietly.

“She owns a house under a trust in Lake Forest,” he said.

Victor stared at the address.

Clara remembered something Ethan had said after Christmas.

“Pretty lady gave me red car.”

Everyone had assumed he meant Serena.

“What did Helena look like?” Clara asked.

Victor pulled up an old photo.

Ethan saw it and immediately whispered, “Other lady.”

The room went silent.

Helena had taken him.

Police searched the Lake Forest property and found it empty, but the basement contained boxes of Blackwood records, medical labels, court drafts, and photographs of Ethan taken from outside the mansion.

One board displayed pictures of Clara.

At the center was a typed note:

Victor read it twice.

“Phase three?”

Marcus opened a folder marked CONTINGENCY.

Inside was a plan to declare Victor medically incapacitated after a series of staged episodes. Serena, as future wife, would petition for emergency control of Ethan’s care. Helena would then control the family foundation through a separate proxy agreement.

Clara looked at Victor. “They needed you sick and Ethan helpless.”

“And Serena obedient,” Marcus added.

Victor’s face turned hard. “What made them think I’d become incapacitated?”

Clara thought of the bourbon Victor drank every night.

She stood abruptly.

“Your decanter.”

The mansion kitchen was searched.

The lab found a heart medication dissolved in Victor’s private bourbon bottle.

A drug he had never been prescribed.

Victor sat down slowly.

He had complained of dizziness for weeks.
