Chapter 19 - What Clara Asked For

Victor read every page of Clara’s proposal.
She wanted the foundation to fund independent advocates for children in wealthy households, foster homes, hospitals, and private care systems where staff could be pressured into silence.
She wanted anonymous reporting channels.
Mandatory camera audits.
Independent pediatric reviews whenever a child’s medical routine changed suddenly.
And no caregiver could be fired for reporting suspected abuse until an outside review was complete.
Victor looked up.
“You wrote this in one night?”
“I’ve been thinking about it since the foyer.”
He closed the folder.
“Approved.”
Clara blinked. “You haven’t read the budget.”
“I did.”
“It’s expensive.”
“So is burying the truth.”
She studied him.
“That sounded almost wise.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
For the first time, she laughed around him without forcing it.
The criminal cases took months.
Helena was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, attempted poisoning, child endangerment, and charges connected to Naomi’s death. Martin was convicted on overlapping counts and kidnapping. Serena received a shorter sentence after testifying, but the judge made clear that cooperation did not excuse violence against Ethan or Clara.
Victor attended every major hearing.
Not because he enjoyed watching people fall.
Because he had finally learned what happened when powerful families treated silence like loyalty.
One afternoon after court, Clara found him standing at Naomi’s grave.
“I should have known,” he said.
Clara stood beside him.
“No. You should have listened sooner.”
He nodded.
“That’s worse.”
“It’s also something you can change.”
He looked at her.
“Have I?”
Clara thought about the first night. His accusation. His anger. The way he had looked at her uniform before he looked at the bruise Serena’s heel left across it.
Then she thought about the man who had allowed investigators to search every account, every office, every family secret without protecting his own pride.
“Yes,” she said. “Some.”
Victor smiled faintly.
“I’ll take some.”
His phone buzzed.
