Chapter 1 - The Papers on the Floor

Arthur Vance knew something was wrong before he reached the living room.
His son was crying.
Not loudly. Evan never cried loudly anymore. Since his mother died, the nine-year-old had learned to swallow hurt as if making noise might make people leave.
Arthur dropped his overnight bag in the foyer.
“Evan?”
A chair scraped across hardwood.
Then Maria’s voice came sharp and breathless from the study.
“Don’t touch him!”
Arthur ran.
He hit the doorway hard enough to bruise his shoulder and stopped cold.
Legal papers were scattered across the rug. His wife, Elena, stood beside the desk with one hand locked around Evan’s wrist. Maria Santos, the boy’s nanny, was between them, holding a thick envelope against her chest.
“What on earth is happening in my house?” Arthur demanded.
Everyone froze.
Elena recovered first. She always did.
“Arthur, thank God.” She released Evan and stepped toward him. “Maria broke into my office. She’s been stealing private documents.”
Maria’s eyes flashed. “Mr. Vance, please look at these before she takes them.”
“Don’t give him anything,” Elena snapped.
Arthur’s gaze dropped to Evan. His son’s face was pale.
“Dad,” Evan whispered. “She said I had to sign.”
Arthur turned slowly toward Elena.
“Sign what?”
Elena laughed once, too quickly. “A school form. He’s confused.”
“I’m not confused,” Evan said.
The room changed.
Arthur had spent twenty years negotiating hostile acquisitions. He knew the exact second a lie stopped being useful.
He held out his hand.
“Maria.”
She gave him the envelope.
Inside were copies of transfer instructions from the Evan Vance Irrevocable Trust. The trust held the assets left by Evan’s late mother, Rebecca: investment accounts, property interests, and shares Arthur had sworn would remain untouched until his son was an adult.
The first page requested an immediate transfer of eight million dollars.
The destination account belonged to Vance Laurent Holdings.
Elena’s family company.
Arthur felt his pulse slow.
“Elena.”
She lifted her chin. “That account belongs to our family business.”
“No,” Arthur said. “That money belongs to my son.”
“It’s an internal restructuring.”
“From an irrevocable child’s trust?”
“Arthur, darling, Maria is twisting this.”
Maria stepped forward. “There are more pages.”
Arthur turned one.
Then another.
His signature appeared on a trustee authorization form.
He had never signed it.
Elena moved closer. “We can discuss this privately.”
“Stay away from my son right now.”
Her face hardened. “You’d believe a nanny over your own wife?”
Arthur looked at Maria, then at the forged signature, then at Evan’s red wrist.
“Maria has shown me evidence,” he said. “You’ve shown me attitude.”
Elena’s voice dropped. “You can’t kick me out of this house.”
“Just watch me protect it.”
He reached for his phone.
Before he could dial, it rang.
The caller ID made his stomach drop.
HARRISON PRIVATE BANK.
Arthur answered.
A woman said, “Mr. Vance, I’m calling to confirm tomorrow morning’s eight-million-dollar disbursement.”
Arthur stared at Elena.
She smiled.

And that was when he realized the paperwork on the floor was not a plan.
It was already in motion.
