Chapter 5 - The Bank Door

By eight forty-five, Arthur, Clara, and Detective Reed were standing outside Harrison Private Bank.
Maria stayed home with Evan and two off-duty security officers Arthur trusted.
Elena had vanished.
Her phone went straight to voicemail.
At nine sharp, the bank’s fraud director led them into a conference room.
“Mr. Vance,” she said, “the transfer is frozen for seventy-two hours pending investigation.”
Arthur exhaled for the first time all morning.
“Now show me who approved it.”
The director slid a tablet across the table.
Two electronic approvals appeared.
Arthur Vance.
Elena Vance.
Beneath them was a video verification record.
Clara leaned forward. “Play it.”
The screen showed a man wearing a dark baseball cap in a dim room. His face was partly shadowed.
He held up Arthur’s driver’s license and answered security questions correctly.
Mother’s maiden name.
First company.
College roommate.
Arthur felt sick.
“That isn’t me.”
“We know that now,” the fraud director said. “But the voiceprint similarity passed automated review.”
Reed stopped the video.
“Can we enhance the background?”
A technician zoomed in.
Behind the fake Arthur was a framed watercolor of a sailboat.
Arthur recognized it immediately.
“That painting hangs in Elena’s brother’s office.”
The fraud director’s face changed.
Clara whispered, “Lucas.”
Arthur’s phone rang.
Maria.
He answered instantly.
“What happened?”
Her voice was barely controlled.
“Mr. Vance, someone is outside the house.”
“Security?”
“No. A woman.”
“Do not open the door.”
“She says she’s from Child Protective Services.”
Arthur stood.
“What?”
“She has papers saying there’s a report that you left Evan with an undocumented caregiver in an unsafe home.”
Maria was a lawful permanent resident. Elena knew that.
This was not a misunderstanding.
It was retaliation.
Arthur started for the door.
Then Maria said, “Sir, there’s more.”
“What?”
“The complaint says I physically restrained Evan last night.”
Arthur stopped.
Elena had reversed the story.
Maria continued, “And there’s a video attached.”
Arthur’s stomach dropped.
“What video?”
A pause.
“The one from your study.”
He remembered Elena standing over Evan.
He remembered Maria stepping between them.
But if the footage had been cut at the right moment, the truth could look like anything.
Reed looked at him.
“Arthur?”
Arthur lowered the phone.
“Elena isn’t just stealing money.”
May you like
He looked back at the frozen transfer on the bank screen.
“She’s building a case to take my son.”
