Chapter 19 - What the House Cost

Lucas’s confession did not end the case.

It exploded it.

He immediately tried to retract the statement, claiming sarcasm and coercion. Prosecutors did not care. Combined with Graham’s testimony, Rebecca’s hidden files, the payment records, and Lucas’s messages, it was enough to charge him with conspiracy connected to Rebecca’s death.

Elena took a plea deal.

She admitted bank fraud, trust interference, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to intimidate witnesses. She insisted she never intended Rebecca to die.

Arthur believed one part of that.

Intent did not bring Rebecca back.

Meridian withdrew the guarantee claim after forensic evidence proved Arthur’s signature had been copied and the video verification staged.

The Vance house remained his.

The family company did not survive.

Vance Laurent Holdings entered bankruptcy within two weeks.

Employees lost jobs.

Investors lost money.

Arthur felt no satisfaction in that.

Fraud always had people standing too close to it.

Maria gave formal notice three weeks later.

Evan cried.

Arthur almost did.

“You said you’d say goodbye,” Evan told her.

Maria knelt in front of him.

“I am saying goodbye to the job. Not to you.”

“Are you still coming to my science fair?”

“Front row.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

He hugged her.

After Evan went upstairs, Arthur found Maria in the kitchen packing the last of her things.

“I owe you more than a severance package,” he said.

“You owe me nothing.”

“That’s not true.”

She zipped her bag.

“Then owe me one thing.”

“What?”

“Be his father when things are boring too.”

Arthur frowned.

“Boring?”

“School pickup. Burned pancakes. Parent conferences. Sitting through a forty-minute presentation about rocks.”

He smiled despite himself.

“He likes rocks.”

“I know.”

Arthur looked toward the hallway.

“I missed too much.”

“Yes.”

Again, she did not soften it.

He appreciated that about her.

“But you don’t have to keep missing it.”

Arthur nodded.

Maria lifted her bag.

At the door, she stopped.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“Evan found something in Rebecca’s box. He wanted you to have it after I left.”

She handed him a sealed envelope.

Arthur recognized Rebecca’s handwriting.

FOR ARTHUR, WHEN YOU FINALLY SLOW DOWN.

His throat closed.

Maria left.

Arthur stood alone in the foyer, holding a message written by his dead wife years before any of them knew what was coming.

He opened it.

If you are reading this, I hope you finally learned that protecting a family is not the same thing as providing for one.
