Chapter 9 - The Woman Before Elena

Arthur listened to the recording again.

Then again.

Each time Rebecca’s unfinished sentence hurt more.

“If anything happens to me, Arthur—”

He remembered the morning she died.

She had kissed Evan on the forehead.

She had left a half-finished cup of tea on the kitchen island.

She had texted Arthur at 8:14.

Need to talk tonight. Important.

There had been no tonight.

Reed sent the audio for authentication.

Clara searched old corporate records.

By noon, they had a timeline.

Five years earlier, Laurent Advisory managed part of Rebecca’s separate inheritance. Rebecca discovered unauthorized transfers totaling nine hundred thousand dollars routed through shell companies connected to Laurent executives.

One week later, she moved her money.

Two weeks after that, she died.

“Elena was twenty-nine,” Clara said. “Junior partner. Her brother Lucas handled compliance.”

Arthur stared at the records.

“She told me she had never met Rebecca.”

“She lied.”

A new email arrived from Harrison Private Bank.

The eight-million-dollar transfer had been permanently rejected.

Arthur should have felt relief.

Instead, he felt a countdown.

Elena had lost access to the money.

People who were cornered did reckless things.

Maria entered the study carrying two coffees.

“You need to eat,” she said.

“I need to find my wife.”

“Both can be true.”

He looked at her.

“You’re not scared?”

“I’m terrified.”

“Then why are you still here?”

Maria set the coffee down.

“Because Evan asked me the same thing after his mother died.”

Arthur said nothing.

“He was four. He woke up screaming every night. One morning he asked, ‘Are you going to disappear too?’”

Arthur remembered none of this.

He had been flying between offices, convincing himself work was how he protected his child.

Maria continued, “I told him I would always say goodbye before I left.”

Arthur’s throat tightened.

“You kept that promise.”

“Yes.”

His phone buzzed.

A video message.

Elena appeared on screen in what looked like a hotel room.

Her face was composed.

“Arthur, you’ve made this uglier than it needed to be.”

He turned up the volume.

“You froze the trust. You involved police. You humiliated me in front of staff. So now we negotiate.”

Arthur’s hands curled.

“What does she want?” Maria whispered.

Elena continued.

“Withdraw your fraud complaint. Tell the bank the signature was authorized. Transfer four million, not eight. In exchange, I disappear.”

She smiled faintly.

“And I give you the original file proving who cut Rebecca’s brake line.”

The video ended.

Arthur stared at the black screen.

Reed had been right.

May you like

The transfer was never only about money.

Elena was selling him the truth about his dead wife.
