Chapter 1 - THE FIRST MORNING

The second slap was harder than the first.

My teeth clicked together, my left ear rang, and for one clean second the whole apartment went silent.

Jared stood in front of me with his right hand still raised.

Behind him, my husband stared at the floor.

That was the part I would remember longest.

Not the sting across my face.

Not Gemma's underwear lying beside the laundry basket where she had thrown it at me.

Not Ryan holding up his phone like my humiliation was entertainment.

Dwight's eyes were fixed on the carpet.

He had married me less than twelve hours earlier.

And when his father hit me, he did nothing.

"Apologize," Jared said.

I tasted blood where my tooth had cut the inside of my lip.

"For what?"

"For disrespecting this family."

Susan made a wounded noise from the couch.

"Elizabeth, nobody is trying to hurt you. We are trying to teach you how this home works."

I looked at the three laundry baskets lined up across the living room.

Six people's clothes.

Six people's towels.

Six people's underwear.

Then I looked at the sheet Susan had handed me the night before.

DUTIES OF THE DAUGHTER-IN-LAW.

Three meals a day.

Laundry.

Cleaning.

Eight hundred dollars a month toward household expenses.

And beneath all of it, in Susan's neat handwriting:

Respect the authority of the head of the family.

I laughed.

It came out small and sharp.

Jared's face darkened.

"You think this is funny?"

"No. I think it's over."

I turned toward the bedroom.

Dwight finally moved.

"Liz, come on. Don't make a scene."

I stopped.

"Your father hit me twice."

"He lost his temper."

"And you lost your spine."

Ryan whispered, "Damn," without lowering his phone.

I dragged my suitcase from the bedroom.

Susan stepped into the hallway.

"Where are you going?"

"Anywhere that doesn't come with a chore chart and assault."

Jared blocked the front door.

"If you leave, don't come back."

I pulled my phone from my purse.

"Move."

"You married into this family yesterday. You don't get to threaten us in our home."

"I'm not threatening you. I'm telling you to move."

He took one step closer.

I took one step back.

The balcony door was open behind me.

Beside a toolbox sat a rusted metal bar someone had used while repairing the railing.

I picked it up.

Every face in the room changed.

Dwight raised both hands.

"Liz. Put that down."

I turned toward the glass coffee table instead.

Then I brought the bar down once.

The tabletop exploded.

Glass crashed across the rug.

Susan screamed.

Ryan stopped smiling.

I lowered the bar and looked directly at Jared.

"The next person who touches me or blocks that door will explain it to the police."

Nobody moved.

I left the bar on the floor, rolled my suitcase through the glass-free path beside the wall, and walked into the hallway.

Dwight followed me to the elevator.

"You're really ending our marriage over laundry?"

I pressed the button.

"No."

The elevator opened.

"I'm ending it because you watched your father hit your wife and worried more about keeping him comfortable than keeping me safe."

His face twisted.

"You'll regret this."

I stepped inside.

"You already do."

The doors closed.

Three hours later, a doctor documented the bruising, the loose tooth, and the injury to my ear.

Two hours after that, my friend Amy drove me to a family-law attorney named Christopher Hale.

He watched Ryan's video twice.

Then he asked one question.

"Where is the forty-eight thousand dollars you contributed to the wedding and apartment?"

My stomach tightened.

"In an account Dwight controls."

Christopher leaned back.

"Then we have a bigger problem than laundry."

That night, I opened Dwight's old laptop to find bank records.

Instead, I found a folder labeled X.

Inside was a video recorded one week before our wedding.

Dwight was kissing my maid of honor, Ashley.

And when they stopped, he whispered something that made my hands go cold.

"Once the marriage certificate is filed, we can take the rest."
