Chapter 11 - THE FIRST LIE

Four years earlier.

Dwight and Ashley had known each other before I knew either of them.

That changed everything again.

I called Ashley with Christopher present.

She answered on the fourth ring.

"What?"

"How long have you known Dwight?"

Silence.

"Ashley."

"Since college."

I closed my eyes.

"You told me you met him through me."

"I lied."

"Why?"

"Because Jared asked me to."

My stomach turned.

"So when you became my friend—"

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"That part wasn't planned at first."

I laughed once.

"Do you people hear yourselves? Everything terrible becomes 'not at first.'"

She started crying.

I felt nothing.

"Tell me the truth. All of it."

Ashley admitted she had introduced Jared to Dwight years after college.

Her uncle's investment business had already borrowed money from Jared.

When the business started failing, everyone owed everyone else.

Then Jared began building schemes to move money from new people into old debts.

I was supposed to be one source.

"Why befriend me?"

"To learn what you cared about."

The answer was so clean it hurt.

Birthday conversations.

Late-night wine.

My fear of divorce because of my parents' marriage.

My longing for a stable family.

My insecurity about being the only unmarried woman in my friend group.

I had handed her the map.

She had handed it to Jared.

"And the affair?"

"It started again after you got engaged."

"Again?"

"Dwight and I dated briefly in college."

I stared at the wall.

"He married me while sleeping with the woman helping his father profile me."

Ashley sobbed.

"I'm sorry."

"No. You're sorry the plan failed."

I ended the call.

That afternoon, Christopher received the forensic report on the forged deed.

The signature was copied from a document I had signed months earlier.

A wedding vendor contract.

The witness signature on the forged deed belonged to Susan.

My mother-in-law had not merely benefited.

She had witnessed the fraud.

When investigators questioned her, Susan claimed she thought I had authorized everything.

Then Ryan handed over a second recording.

Susan's voice said clearly:

"If Elizabeth ever sees the actual transfer page, Dwight is finished. Keep it inside the laundry folder. She'll never look there until after the wedding."

I listened twice.

Then I started laughing.

Christopher looked at me carefully.

"You okay?"

"Yes."

For the first time, I actually was.

Because Susan had hidden the document in the one place she expected me to accept without question.

The laundry folder.

And that folder was still inside the apartment.
