Chapter 5 - THE MISSING GROOM

Dwight vanished for thirty-six hours.
His phone went dark.
His car disappeared from the apartment garage.
Ashley stopped answering calls.
Susan told relatives I had "driven a newlywed man into hiding."
Then she posted a photograph from our wedding with the caption:
Some women want a husband. Some women want control.
I did not respond.
Christopher told me silence was cheaper than litigation and more powerful than a family argument.
At noon on the second day, my bank called.
Someone had attempted to open a home-equity line against the townhouse I inherited from my grandmother.
The application listed Dwight as co-owner.
He was not.
It included a deed.
The deed contained my forged signature.
"How many documents did they fake?" I asked.
Christopher looked exhausted.
"We're going to find out."
That afternoon, the court granted an expanded financial restraining order.
By evening, Christopher had contacted the state's attorney.
The marriage that had lasted less than twenty-four hours was now attached to allegations of assault, fraud, forgery, and theft.
Then Dwight walked into Christopher's office.
He came without warning.
No lawyer.
No coat.
His face looked gray.
The receptionist nearly called security before Christopher waved her back.
Dwight looked at me.
"Can we talk alone?"
"No."
"Liz, please."
"You had twelve hours of marriage to choose me. You chose your family every time. Talk here."
He swallowed.
"My dad is in trouble."
"Your dad is trouble."
"He owes people money."
Christopher said nothing.
Dwight looked at him, then back at me.
"It started years ago. Business debt. Gambling. Loans. I thought I could fix it."
"With my inheritance?"
"I was going to replace it."
I actually laughed.
"With what?"
He flinched.
"I have an investment opportunity."
"Of course you do."
"Ashley introduced me to someone."
That caught me.
"Ashley?"
He nodded.
"Her uncle manages private capital. We needed proof of assets to get into the deal. Your trust was supposed to be temporary collateral."
Christopher spoke for the first time.
"Did Elizabeth authorize any of this?"
Dwight looked away.
"Not yet."
"Not yet?" I repeated.
"After we were married, I thought she'd understand."
"You made an EXIT PLAN."
His face drained.
"You found that?"
There it was.
Not denial.
Recognition.
"Yes."
He sank into a chair.
"That wasn't mine."
"Whose was it?"
"My father's."
The room went quiet.
"Jared planned my divorce?"
Dwight rubbed both hands over his face.
"He planned everything."
Then he looked at me with red eyes.
"Including why I met you in the first place."
