Chapter 4 - THE COMPANY

The company was called Harbor Ridge Management.

It had no public office, no employees, and no visible business beyond receiving money.

My forty-eight thousand dollars had reached it in four transfers.

Christopher pointed to the dates.

"Look closely."

The first transfer happened two days after I deposited my wedding contribution.

The second happened after I paid the venue deposit.

The third happened the week Susan gave me the daughter-in-law duty list.

The fourth happened the morning of our wedding.

"Dwight told me the account was being used for wedding expenses."

"Some of it was," Christopher said. "Enough to keep you from noticing."

My skin prickled.

"How much is left?"

"Less than three thousand dollars."

I sat back.

For months, I had worked late, skipped vacations, and sold stock I'd held since my twenties.

Dwight had called me practical.

Responsible.

His favorite word had been team.

Meanwhile, his family had been draining the account.

Amy paced behind me.

"Can they be arrested?"

Christopher raised a hand.

"We don't jump ahead. We document. We trace. We prove who authorized what."

"I authorized none of it."

"Then we prove that."

That evening, Ryan called me.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered his phone had captured the assault.

"What do you want?"

His voice was lower than usual.

"Don't tell Dad I called."

"Why?"

"Because he's losing it."

"He hit me. I noticed."

Ryan sighed.

"I'm serious. Since the papers came, everybody's screaming. Mom says you destroyed the family. Gemma says we might lose the apartment. Dwight keeps asking where his old laptop is."

I looked at Amy.

"Why does Gemma think you'll lose the apartment?"

Ryan hesitated.

"Because Dad borrowed against it."

"For what?"

"I don't know."

"Ryan."

"He said the money was temporary. He said once Dwight got married, everything would settle."

My heart thudded.

"Once Dwight got married to me?"

Silence.

"Ryan?"

"I gotta go."

"Wait."

He whispered before hanging up.

"Check the wedding registry safe."

I stared at the dead screen.

Amy frowned.

"What wedding registry safe?"

I knew.

Susan had insisted that all envelopes from the reception be locked in a small fireproof safe in her bedroom until we returned from the honeymoon we never took.

Cash gifts.

Checks.

Cards.

Everything.

The next morning, a process server accompanied by police delivered the protection order at the family apartment.

Jared shouted from inside.

Susan cried.

Dwight refused to open the bedroom door.

But the officers made one discovery before leaving.

The fireproof safe was gone.

And so was Dwight.
