Chapter 13 - Henry's Choice

Emily called the nurse station before Daniel could stop her.
Within minutes, hospital security removed his private guards from the floor.
Daniel was furious.
"You have no authority over my father."
Henry's voice came weakly from the bed. "She has more than you do."
Daniel turned.
"Dad, you're confused."
"That's your mother's favorite word."
Henry asked the nurse for a social worker and requested that Daniel and Gloria be removed from his medical contact list.
Daniel went still.
"You're choosing her over your own son?"
"I'm choosing the person who didn't steal from me."
Daniel left without another word.
Emily had never seen him cry.
"I should have stopped them years ago," he said.
"Stopped what?"
"Your marriage."
Emily's throat tightened.
Henry stared at the ceiling. "Daniel saw your name in Robert's records when he was nineteen. Gloria told him the Carter claim could someday destroy us. She made you into a threat before he ever met you."
"Then why did he marry me?"
"Because ten years later, when our lenders started asking questions, Gloria had an idea. If you became a Mercer and signed broad marital authorizations, they could bury the old ownership dispute inside family transactions."
Emily felt physically ill.
"The coffee shop."
Henry nodded. "Not an accident."
"Did Daniel ever love me?"
Henry closed his eyes.
"I can't answer that."
"You knew."
"Not at first. I learned after your engagement."
Emily stepped back.
"And you said nothing."
"I told myself he had changed."
"You told yourself silence was kindness."
Henry accepted it.
"Yes."
"There is one more document," Henry said.
"Of course there is."
"In my home office safe. It proves Gloria moved Robert's shares through a trust she controlled."
Emily laughed without humor. "The office in my house?"
"Yes."
"Combination?"
Henry told her.
Rachel arranged for a deputy to accompany Emily back to the property.
They arrived at 10:40 p.m.
The front door was unlocked.
The alarm had been disabled.
The safe door stood wide.
Empty.
Then Emily smelled smoke.
Not fireplace smoke.
Electrical smoke.
May you like
From the basement.
And someone had locked the basement door from the other side.
