Chapter 9 - The Introduction

Emily left Henry's room feeling as if the hospital floor had shifted beneath her.

Daniel had always told the story of their first meeting the same way.

A rainy Thursday. A coffee shop near her office. He had taken the wrong drink. She had laughed. He had asked for her number.

Random.

Sweet.

Now she sat alone in a hospital stairwell and searched old emails on her phone.

Four years earlier, two weeks before the coffee shop, she had received a LinkedIn message from Mercer Development inviting her to a charity networking event. She had declined.

The sender was Daniel's assistant.

Three days later, Daniel had "accidentally" appeared at her coffee shop.

Emily called her best friend, Nora Patel.

Nora answered sleepily. "Em? It's two-thirty."

"I need a divorce lawyer."

Silence.

Then Nora was fully awake. "What happened?"

Emily told her enough.

Nora said, "My cousin handles high-asset cases. I'll call her at seven. Where are you?"

"Franklin Memorial."

"I'm coming."

"You don't have to."

"That sentence is why I'm coming."

When Emily returned to the waiting room, Daniel was gone.

So was Henry's medication bottle.

At seven-thirty, Nora arrived with coffee, clean clothes, and the kind of anger Emily could borrow until she found her own.

By nine, they were standing inside First Franklin Bank with attorney Rachel Kim.

The manager examined the brass key.

"Box 417," he said. "It's old."

"Whose name is on it?" Emily asked.

The manager typed.

His expression changed.

"Robert Carter and... Emily Carter."

Emily stared at him. "I was twenty-two when he died."

"You're still listed as a co-renter."

They entered the vault.

The box was long and narrow.

Emily turned the key.

Inside were three things.

A sealed letter addressed to her.

A small digital voice recorder.

And a photograph.

Emily picked up the photograph first.

Her father stood beside a younger Gloria Mercer at a marina.

The night before he died.

Under it were six words:

If I don't come back, ask her.

Rachel looked at Emily.

"Do you want to hear the recorder here?"

Emily pressed play.

Her father's voice filled the tiny vault.

"Emily, if you're hearing this, then I was right not to trust them."

A pause.

May you like

Then Robert said a name Emily never expected.

"Daniel Mercer already knows who you are."
