Chapter 2 - The House in Her Name

Emily read the page twice because the words refused to make sense.
"This is fake," Daniel said.
Henry did not look at him. "No."
"She doesn't own this house."
"She does now."
Gloria grabbed the edge of the table. "You had no right."
Henry finally turned toward his wife. "I had every right. It was mine to transfer. And after what I found, transferring it was the smallest correction I could make."
Emily pressed a napkin around her burned wrist. "Correction for what?"
Henry's jaw tightened.
Daniel stepped between them. "Dad is sick. He doesn't know what he's saying."
"My doctor says my heart is failing," Henry said. "Not my brain."
That silenced him.
Henry pulled out a chair for Emily. "Sit down before you faint."
"I don't want to sit at this table."
"Then don't. But hear me before you leave."
Gloria snapped, "This is not the time."
"It became the time when you put your hand on her."
Henry removed another page.
"This house was refinanced six years ago when Mercer Development nearly went under. The bank required additional collateral."
Emily frowned. "What does that have to do with me?"
"The collateral came from Carter Holdings."
Her stomach dropped.
Carter Holdings had belonged to her father, Robert Carter, before he died. Emily had inherited a minority interest and a trust managed by professionals until she turned thirty-five.
At least, she thought she hadn't.
"My father would never have guaranteed your debt," she said.
Henry's eyes filled with shame. "He didn't."
Daniel muttered, "Dad, stop."
Henry continued. "Someone presented the bank with authorization from the Carter trust."
Emily looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
"Whose authorization?" she asked.
Emily saw her own name.
Her own signature.
Except she had never signed it.
The room tilted.
"That isn't mine."
Nobody answered.
"Daniel?"
He rubbed his forehead. "There were a lot of documents during the restructuring. You signed things."
"Not this."
"You don't remember every piece of paper from six years ago."
Emily stood.
"Six years ago I didn't even know you."
Daniel froze.
The whole room did.
Henry closed his eyes.
Gloria whispered, "Oh, God."
Emily stared at the forged signature until the ink blurred.
Then she noticed something typed below it.
Authorized representative: D. Mercer.

Daniel's full legal name followed.
But the document was dated two years before their first date.
