Chapter 16 - Hannah's Copy

Claire gave them one clue.
"Hannah said Daniel would never throw away the thing she hated most."
Daniel almost laughed.
Hannah hated plenty of things.
"The grandfather clock."
Hannah had despised the enormous carved clock in Daniel's study.
Daniel loved it because his father had given it to him.
A note in Hannah's handwriting.
IF THEY ERASE ME, DON'T LET THEM ERASE THE CHILDREN.
Daniel sat down.
He could not open the drive for several minutes.
Laura finally did.
Ava Brooks recognized several altered incident reports.
"They kept extending treatment because every extra week paid someone."
Daniel felt rage rise again.
Primary obstacle: father maintains strong attachment.
Secondary obstacle: child has no documented behavioral diagnosis.
Proposed strategy: CREATE RECORD THROUGH HOME OBSERVATION.
Daniel closed the laptop.
He had seen enough.
Ortiz did not let him look away entirely.
"There's one more folder."
Hannah.
Inside were copies of her complaint, her notes, and a final audio file.
Daniel pressed play.
Hannah sounded tired.
"If Daniel hears this, tell him I was angry he worked too much, but I never doubted he loved Sophie. Tell him guilt makes people easy to manipulate. Don't let anyone use mine or his."
Daniel covered his face.
Sophie came into the room with Rebecca.
"Daddy?"
He opened his arms.
She climbed into his lap.
"Mommy sounds nice."
"She was."
"Was she scared?"
Daniel did not lie.
"Yes."
"But she still did the right thing?"
He nodded.
Sophie thought about that.
"Then being scared doesn't mean you're bad."
Daniel held her tighter.
"No. It doesn't."
Ortiz's phone buzzed.
The forensic team had matched DNA from Hannah's old IV equipment preserved in hospital evidence to contamination found on equipment seized from Marcus's storage unit.
Not enough by itself.
But combined with the ledger, Claire's statement, Rusk's testimony, and hospital footage, prosecutors finally had a path.
Then Thomas Vale requested a meeting.
He was ready to cooperate.
His condition:
He wanted protection from Paul Mercer.
Ortiz stared at him through the glass.
"Mercer is in custody."
May you like
Thomas shook his head.
"Mercer isn't the person I'm afraid of."
