Chapter 18 - Sophie's Statement

Sophie did not have to repeat her story to every adult who wanted details.

Daniel watched from another room.

The interviewer asked, "What happened on your birthday?"

Sophie colored a purple balloon.

"Claire ate pizza."

"What did you eat?"

"Nothing until Daddy came."

"Why?"

"She wanted me to say Daddy scares me."

"Does he?"

Sophie paused.

"Sometimes he worries too loud."

Daniel almost laughed through tears.

"But no. He doesn't make me scared like Claire did."

Then came the question Daniel feared.

"Do you think any of this was your fault?"

Sophie shook her head.

"Not anymore."

Daniel had to look away from the glass. Weeks earlier, Sophie had asked whether she caused Claire's anger. Now she could name the truth without borrowing an adult's words. The advocate let the silence sit instead of filling it, and Sophie went back to coloring the balloon as if she had just put down something heavy.

Daniel closed his eyes.

That answer mattered more than any conviction.

Claire eventually accepted a plea agreement on charges tied to child endangerment, fraud conspiracy, forged records, and evidence tampering. Her cooperation strengthened the cases against Marcus, Mercer, Thomas, and Evelyn.

Marcus fought every charge.

The jury did not believe him.

Prosecutors did not pretend every mystery could be proved exactly the way Daniel wanted.

But they proved enough.

One afternoon, Daniel received a letter from Claire.

He almost threw it away.

Laura told him he did not owe her a response.

He read it once.

Claire wrote that she was sorry.

That Marcus had controlled her.

That she had been afraid.

That she had started by telling herself Sophie would only be away for a few weeks.

Daniel folded the letter.

Sophie was doing homework at the table.

"Is that from Claire?"

He hesitated.

"Yes."

"Does she say sorry?"

"Yes."

Sophie thought about it.

"Do I have to forgive her?"

Daniel answered immediately.

"No."

"Can I someday?"

"If you want."

She nodded and went back to math.

Then she looked up again.

"Can we have pizza Friday?"

Daniel smiled.

"Every Friday if you want."

She grinned.

"Even if I get a bad grade?"

May you like

"Especially then. We can complain about fractions together."

For the first time, the word pizza sounded normal again.
