Chapter 19 - The Basement Door

A year after Sophie's seventh birthday, Daniel stood in front of the basement door with a sledgehammer.

He smiled.

The security hub had been moved upstairs into a locked utility cabinet with transparent access logs.

Ava Brooks helped start a nonprofit using recovered Brightwood assets to pay for independent advocates for children in contested care placements.

One evening Sophie found him holding Hannah's old phone.

"You miss Mommy?"

"Yeah."

"Me too."

"Sometimes I miss who I thought she was."

"That's allowed."

"Even if she did bad things?"

"You can miss good moments without pretending the bad ones didn't happen."

Then she pointed to the basement.

"Can we smash something?"

Daniel laughed.

"One board. With goggles."

She wore pink safety goggles and tapped a scrap piece of drywall with a tiny hammer.

"I'm helping."

"Obviously."

Later, while removing the old security cabinet, Daniel found one last envelope wedged behind it.

His stomach tightened.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a birthday card.

For Sophie.

Hannah had written it years earlier, apparently planning ahead.

To my brave girl on a birthday I may not get to see.

Daniel stopped.

Sophie looked at him.

"Read it."

His voice broke halfway through.

The last line said:

If anyone ever tells you love must be earned by being quiet, being easy, or being perfect, they are wrong.

Sophie took the card.

"Mommy knew stuff."

Daniel smiled through tears.

"Yeah. She did."

May you like

Then Sophie asked the question he had been waiting a year to hear.

"Can my next birthday be loud?"
