Chapter 17 - The Last Name in the Ledger

Thomas Vale looked twenty years older than he had a week earlier.
Thomas rubbed his hands together.
"Evelyn Cross."
Laura frowned.
The name appeared repeatedly in Brightwood's financial records.
Consulting fees.
Legal review.
She had been his father's closest adviser.
She had attended Hannah's funeral.
She had encouraged Daniel to "open his heart again" after meeting Claire.
Daniel went cold.
"She introduced Claire to the foundation fundraiser."
She used private foundation networks to identify children with money attached to them.
Mercer handled regulatory pressure.
Thomas handled trust mechanics.
Marcus handled operations.
Claire handled access.
"Why would Evelyn risk this?" Daniel asked.
Thomas looked at him.
"Because Brightwood wasn't only a treatment business. It was a pipeline. Families in conflict paid people who knew how to turn conflict into billable control."
Daniel felt sick.
"Did she order Hannah killed?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"She said, 'The Sutton problem has to end before the complaint goes public.'"
"Is that a yes?"
"I don't know what she meant."
Daniel slammed his palm on the table.
"You knew enough to run."
Thomas flinched.
His lawyer intervened.
Ortiz asked, "Where is Evelyn now?"
Thomas swallowed.
"Foundation retreat house."
Police arrived before she could leave.
Evelyn was sitting on the veranda drinking tea.
She did not resist.
When Daniel entered with Ortiz, she looked disappointed.
"You always were emotional where Sophie was concerned."
Daniel stared at her.
"She's my daughter."
"Exactly. Attachment makes people irrational."
"You targeted children because they had money."
"I connected desperate families with services."
"You helped build lies around them."
"Families lie about themselves every day. We simply documented patterns."
Daniel felt an almost physical disgust.
"Hannah found you."
For the first time, Evelyn's expression changed.
"Hannah was relentless."
"Did you have her killed?"
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"Do you think I would answer that?"
Ortiz stepped forward.
"You don't need to."
She held up a recorder.
Thomas had worn a wire during a call with Evelyn an hour earlier.
On it, Evelyn had said:
"Marcus was supposed to make Hannah quiet, not dead."
May you like
Evelyn's face finally cracked.
And Daniel knew the entire house of lies had just lost its roof.
