Chapter 11 - The Judge

Judge William Harlow had known the Carter family for twenty-five years.

He had attended Daniel’s wedding.

He had spoken at Daniel’s father’s funeral.

Margaret had donated to his first campaign.

Rachel did not accuse him of corruption.

Not yet.

But the call mattered.

Margaret had no legitimate reason to contact him from booking.

Investigators pulled phone records.

They found eleven calls between Margaret and Harlow over the previous six months.

Most lasted less than five minutes.

One lasted forty-two.

Emily stared at the list.

“What were they discussing?”

“No one knows yet,” Rachel said.

Daniel paced. “He needs to recuse himself from anything involving us.”

“He will.”

The criminal case moved quickly enough to frighten Margaret’s lawyer.

Forged prescriptions.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Assault.

Witness intimidation.

Potential conspiracy charges.

But Margaret still had influence.

She was released on bond with electronic monitoring.

Emily nearly dropped her phone when Rachel told her.

“She’s out?”

“She cannot contact you, Daniel, or come within five hundred feet.”

“That didn’t stop her before.”

“No. Which is why we’re adding security.”

Daniel arrived at Emily’s apartment that evening with groceries and no overnight bag.

A small detail.

A respectful one.

He cooked soup.

They ate in silence.

Finally he said, “I filed papers giving up any claim to manage your trust.”

Emily looked up.

“You didn’t have to.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I need you to know I won’t become another person controlling you.”

She studied him.

“Daniel, signing papers doesn’t fix what you did.”

“I know.”

“Watching her hit me was also a choice.”

“I know.”

“You made me feel crazy for being afraid.”

His eyes filled. “I know.”

This time she believed his shame.

She still did not confuse shame with repair.

At 11:18 p.m., someone triggered the building alarm.

Security cameras showed smoke in the underground garage.

Emily stood too fast.

Daniel grabbed her coat.

“Stay behind me.”

They moved toward the stairwell with other residents.

Then Rachel called.

“Do not evacuate through the garage.”

Daniel stopped.

“Why?”

“Police just found Evan Pike’s car across the street.”

Emily’s breath caught.

Rachel said, “The fire alarm is a distraction.”
