Chapter 17 - The Man She Paid

Evan Pike had stopped cooperating after his arrest.
The safe deposit records changed that.
Prosecutors showed him ten years of payments.
Then they showed him the voicemail Robert left before his death.
Pike asked for a deal.
His statement lasted all afternoon.
Daniel and Emily were not allowed in the room.
Rachel briefed them afterward.
Pike claimed Margaret hired him years earlier to “watch” Robert.
At first, that meant following him.
Photographing meetings.
Reporting which lawyer he visited.
Then Margaret asked Pike to scare him.
Nothing more, Pike insisted.
On the night Robert died, Pike confronted him in the basement.
There was an argument.
Robert moved toward the stairs.
Pike grabbed his jacket.
Robert fell.
“He says he didn’t mean to kill him,” Rachel said.
Daniel stood so fast his chair hit the wall.
“He left my father there?”
“He called Margaret.”
“And she waited.”
“Yes.”
Daniel paced to the window.
Emily had never seen grief turn into rage so quietly.
Rachel continued. “Pike says Margaret told him not to call 911. She arrived first. She waited until Robert stopped responding.”
Daniel pressed both hands against the glass.
Emily felt sick.
Margaret had not only protected the man who caused Robert’s fall.
She had used him for years afterward.
The threats.
The surveillance.
The hospital photo.
All of it.
Prosecutors prepared new charges.
Thomas agreed to testify about the money.
Carol would testify about the medical plan.
Dr. Cole provided access logs.
The case became too large for Margaret to dismiss as family drama.
Then, two days before the preliminary hearing, Margaret disappeared.
Her ankle monitor was found cut open in a grocery store parking lot.
Police searched her house.
Empty.
Daniel called Emily immediately.
“Lock the apartment.”
“It’s already locked.”
“Where’s Noah?”
“In my arms.”
“Security?”
“Outside.”
Daniel exhaled.
Then Emily heard a knock.
Three slow taps.
She froze.
The security guard called through the door.
“Mrs. Carter? There’s a package for you.”
Emily looked at the monitor.
A plain brown box sat outside.
No return address.

On top, written in Margaret’s handwriting, were four words:
YOU STOLE MY SON.
