Chapter 9 - The Camera

Hospital security pulled footage immediately.

The person who took the photo wore a maintenance uniform, baseball cap, and surgical mask.

But at 2:47 a.m., one camera caught his face for half a second.

Daniel recognized him.

“Evan Pike.”

Emily looked at him. “Who?”

“He worked for my mother years ago. Security at my parents’ old property.”

Rachel folded her arms. “Does he still work for her?”

“I didn’t think so.”

Police found payments to Pike from MJC Ventures.

Monthly.

For almost two years.

The situation changed immediately from family fraud to organized intimidation.

Emily was moved to a private floor under a restricted name.

Daniel was no longer allowed to tell relatives where she was.

He did not argue.

That mattered.

Not enough to erase the past.

But it mattered.

The contractions stopped, and doctors said the baby might remain inside for weeks.

Emily should have felt relieved.

Instead, she felt hunted.

On her third hospital morning, Rachel brought another discovery.

“Your prenatal portal was accessed repeatedly from an IP address tied to Margaret’s house.”

Emily stared at her.

“That’s how she knew everything.”

Appointments.

Lab results.

Doctor notes.

Even the baby’s estimated weight.

Daniel whispered, “How did she get the password?”

Emily looked at him.

“The same way she got everything else. You gave her access to our lives.”

He lowered his eyes.

Years earlier, Daniel had created shared family passwords because Margaret complained that Emily was “secretive.”

Emily had fought him then too.

He called her paranoid.

Now the word tasted ugly in the room.

That afternoon, the hospital discharged Emily to a secure apartment arranged through Rachel’s firm.

Daniel asked if he could come.

Emily said no.

He looked hurt but nodded.

“I understand.”

“You can visit when I say.”

“Okay.”

“And your mother never gets the address.”

“She won’t.”

Emily believed he meant it.

She did not yet know if meaning it was enough.

At 7:30 that night, Rachel called.

Police had searched Margaret’s house.

They found forged signatures, medical printouts, copies of Emily’s IDs, and one folder marked DELIVERY.

Inside was a hospital birth plan Emily had never written.

At the bottom, under emergency contact, Margaret had listed herself.
