Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Father

Daniel’s father, Robert Carter, had died seven years earlier after falling down the basement stairs.
The official explanation was simple.
He had been drinking.
He slipped.
Daniel had never questioned it.
Carol Jensen did.
According to her statement, Margaret called her that night before calling 911.
Robert was alive.
Conscious.
Bleeding badly from the head.
Carol told Margaret to call an ambulance immediately.
Margaret waited twenty-two minutes.
“Why?” Daniel whispered.
Rachel’s expression was careful. “Carol says your parents had been fighting about money.”
The same kind of money.
Property transfers.
Business accounts.
Signatures.
Daniel’s father had discovered Margaret moving assets into companies he did not control.
He planned to change his will.
He died before he could.
Emily watched Daniel absorb the possibility that the story of his childhood had been written by the same woman who rewrote everyone else’s.
“Did she push him?”
“No one can prove that,” Rachel said. “Carol says she never saw what happened.”
But there was more.
Robert had left a voicemail for his attorney thirty minutes before the fall.
The attorney had archived it.
Police recovered the recording.
Daniel listened in silence.
Robert’s voice sounded strained but clear.
“Margaret has been signing my name. If anything happens to me, check the holding companies.”
Daniel’s knees seemed to weaken.
Emily reached for his hand before she could stop herself.
He looked at her.
She did not know whether the touch was forgiveness.
It wasn’t.
It was human.
That night, Daniel sat beside Noah’s bassinet for hours.
“My whole life,” he said, “she told me Dad was weak.”
Emily adjusted the blanket over Noah.
“She needed you to believe that.”
“She made me like her.”
Emily looked at him sharply.
“No.”
He frowned.
“You chose how you treated me.”
He swallowed.
“You’re right.”
Again, no but.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from Thomas.
BRO, I NEED TO SEE YOU. MOM LIED TO ME TOO.
Attached was a photograph of a safe deposit key.
