Chapter 16 - The Safe Deposit Box

Thomas arrived at Rachel’s office looking older than he had a week earlier.
No expensive jacket.
No joke.
No charm.
Just a man carrying a small brass key.
“Mom gave me this after Dad died,” he said. “She told me it was for an account that had been closed.”
“Why keep it?” Daniel asked.
“I forgot I had it.”
Rachel did not hide her skepticism.
Thomas looked at Emily. “I know what you think of me.”
Emily answered, “I think you took money that came from my house.”
He nodded. “I did.”
“And you called me useless.”
His eyes dropped. “I did that too.”
“Then don’t ask me to make you feel better.”
He nodded again.
The key matched a box at a private bank downtown.
Robert Carter had rented it under his own name.
Inside were photocopies of financial records, handwritten notes, a flash drive, and a sealed letter addressed to Daniel and Thomas.
Daniel opened it with shaking hands.
His father had known.
Not everything.
But enough.
He wrote that Margaret had become obsessed with controlling the family’s assets after years of financial insecurity.
He admitted he had enabled her because confronting her was exhausting.
Then came the sentence that made Daniel stop reading.
I TAUGHT YOU BOYS THAT KEEPING THE PEACE WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN STOPPING THE PERSON CAUSING THE HARM. I WAS WRONG.
Emily looked away.
Daniel finished silently.
The flash drive contained spreadsheets showing more than $2.6 million moved over ten years into entities controlled by Margaret.
Some of the money belonged to Robert.
Some belonged to Daniel.
Some belonged to Thomas.
A small portion came from an education account set up for future grandchildren.
Noah’s future had been raided before he was even born.
Thomas whispered, “She stole from everybody.”
Rachel shook her head. “Not everybody.”
She pointed at one column.
One account consistently received money.
Beneficiary: Evan Pike.
Daniel stared.
“Why was she paying him before Dad died?”
Nobody answered.

Then Rachel opened the final spreadsheet.
The first payment to Pike was dated three days before Robert fell down the stairs.
