Chapter 14 - The Price Of A Mother’s Love

Every instinct screamed at me.

Run.

Fight.

Destroy anyone who touched my child.

But I knew what they wanted.

They wanted me emotional.

They wanted me careless.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Mara, no.”

“She has Ellie.”

“We’ll find her.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice broke.

“You don’t understand.”

Everyone looked at me.

“She is my entire world.”

My father stepped forward.

“And that is exactly why you cannot go alone.”

The rescue team traced the message.

An abandoned Kingsley property.

The old Bluebird facility.

The same place my father disappeared.

We entered quietly.

The building was dark.

Cold.

Empty.

Then I heard her.

“Mommy!”

I froze.

“Ellie!”

Her voice came again.

“I’m here!”

I moved forward.

Then a light turned on.

Edward Whitmore stood in the center.

Holding Ellie.

My blood turned cold.

“Put her down.”

He smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

“You don’t know me.”

“Oh, I know you.”

He looked at Ellie.

“She’s the future.”

“She’s a child.”

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“She’s the key.”

I stepped closer.

“What do you want?”

“Bluebird.”

“You’ll never get it.”

He laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

He pointed at the walls.

Screens turned on.

Documents appeared.

Photos.

Records.

Everything.

“Your father built Bluebird.”

He looked at me.

“But your mother improved it.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She added something.”

“What?”

He smiled.

“A final clause.”

I felt fear.

“What clause?”

He looked at Ellie.

“The entire empire transfers to whoever protects her.”

Silence.

Then Edward smiled.

“And I’m about to prove you are not capable.”

He pressed a button.

The room changed.

Gas filled the air.

People screamed.

I grabbed Ellie.

Holding her close.

But before everything went dark…

May you like

I heard Edward whisper:

“Goodbye, Mara.”
