Chapter 5 - The Man Who Came Back From The Dead

The doors opened slowly.

And there he was.

Charles Kingsley.

My grandfather.

Alive.

Older.

But alive.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because some people are supposed to stay in the past.

“You look like your father.”

His voice was calm.

I stared at him.

“You’re dead.”

He smiled slightly.

“That was the idea.”

My anger rose.

“You let everyone believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at Ellie sleeping in my arms.

“Because I knew someone would come for her.”

My heart tightened.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“Before your father died.”

The room became silent.

Grant stepped forward.

“Charles, this has gone far enough.”

My grandfather looked at him.

“You were always impatient.”

Grant’s face changed.

Because suddenly I understood.

Grant wasn’t controlling this.

He was being controlled.

Charles looked at me.

“Your husband never loved your empire.”

I looked at Grant.

“Is that true?”

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Then Charles handed me a document.

“The truth about Ellie.”

I opened it.

And my hands started shaking.

Because the document revealed something impossible.

Ellie wasn’t only the Bluebird beneficiary.

She was the legal successor to a hidden Kingsley foundation worth billions.

A foundation Grant could never access.

Unless…

I was removed.

Charles looked at me.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at Grant.

His face was pale.

“You didn’t want a divorce.”

Silence.

“You wanted my daughter.”

Grant looked away.

And for the first time…

I saw fear in his eyes.

Then Charles whispered:

“But there is one thing none of us know.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He stared at Ellie.

“The person who created the Bluebird protection…”

A pause.

“Was your mother.”

May you like

I froze.

Because my mother had been dead for ten years.
