Chapter 16 - The Final Betrayal Inside Kingsley

The words echoed in my mind.
Someone inside Kingsley gave Edward access.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the betrayal.
There was still someone hiding.
I looked around the room.
My father.
My mother.
Daniel.
Grant.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
But someone had opened the door for Edward.
Someone had handed him the key to my daughter.
“Who?”
My voice was quiet.
Daniel looked at his phone.
“We don’t know yet.”
My father immediately shook his head.
“That’s not possible.”
“Why?”
“Because only three people had access to Bluebird security.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
He hesitated.
“Me.”
A pause.
“Your mother.”
Another pause.
“And you.”
My heart stopped.
“Me?”
He nodded.
“The system recognized your identity before you even knew about it.”
I looked at Ellie.
My daughter.
The person everyone wanted.
Then my phone received a notification.
A new Bluebird file.
EMERGENCY OVERRIDE ACTIVATED.
I opened it.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Recorded years earlier.
Her face was tired.
But determined.
“Mara…”
My breath caught.
“If you are seeing this, it means the final attack has begun.”
Everyone became silent.
My mother continued.
“I need you to understand something.”
A pause.
“Bluebird was never designed to protect money.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“It was designed to expose the people who believe they own everything.”
My hands tightened.
She continued:
“The person who betrayed Kingsley will not be the person you suspect.”
The video paused.
Then the final message appeared.
LOOK INSIDE THE FAMILY FOUNDATION.
Daniel immediately started searching.
Minutes later, he froze.
“Mara.”
“What?”
He turned the laptop toward me.
A list of foundation employees.
One name highlighted.
I stared.
“No.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You know her?”
I whispered:
“She raised me.”
The name on the screen was:
MARGARET HALE.
Again.
The woman who betrayed us once.
The woman who claimed she regretted everything.
The woman who helped me find the truth.
My father shook his head.
“She couldn’t.”
But then another file appeared.
A bank transfer.
Millions.
Sent directly to Margaret.
The sender:
Edward Whitmore.
The room became silent.
Then the mansion lights went out.
A voice came through the speakers.
“Mara.”
Everyone froze.
Margaret.
“I’m sorry.”
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Because she wasn’t apologizing.
She was saying goodbye.
