Chapter 1 - The First Word

The smell of burned hair stopped Emma Torres cold.
Not a scream. Not a crash. Just that sharp, dry smell drifting from the main bathroom.
Then came a tiny sound.
A swallowed cry.
Emma dropped the polishing cloth and pushed open the door.
Seven-year-old Lily Callahan sat rigid beside the vanity. Tears ran down her face. Behind her stood Renata Cole, elegant as ever, holding a hot hair straightener inches from the girl's head.
"I told you to stop moving," Renata whispered.
Emma's stomach turned.
"What are you doing?"
Renata lowered the straightener. "Fixing her hair."
"She's crying."
"She always cries."
Emma crossed the room and pulled Lily gently away. The child grabbed the front of Emma's uniform with both hands.
"It's okay," Emma said. "I'm here."
Renata's eyes hardened. "Give her back."
"No."
"You are an employee."
"And she's a child."
For half a second, rage flashed across Renata's face.
Then footsteps sounded in the hall.
Everything changed.
Renata dropped the straightener and stumbled backward.
"Grant!" she cried. "Help me!"
Grant Callahan appeared in the doorway.
Renata pointed at Emma. "She attacked me."
Emma stared at her. "You were hurting Lily."
"That's insane."
Grant looked at his daughter.
Lily had not spoken a complete sentence in almost two years. Not since the night her mother, Claire, died in a car accident.
Grant knelt in front of her.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to say anything."
Renata folded her arms. She almost smiled.
Then Lily lifted her head.
Her lips trembled.
"She..."
Grant froze.
Emma stopped breathing.
Lily raised one shaky finger and pointed at Renata.
"She burned me."
The room went silent.
Grant stood slowly and placed himself between Renata and his daughter.
Renata whispered, "You're going to believe a maid over me?"
Grant shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Lily.
"I believe her."
An hour later, the emergency-room doctor pulled Grant aside.
"There are older injuries," she said quietly. "And we found something else."
Grant's face drained.
"What?"
"A prescription sedative in Lily's blood. It was never prescribed to her."
Emma stared through the glass at Lily asleep in the hospital bed.
The doctor continued.
"Mr. Callahan... according to the toxicology file you authorized after your wife's accident, the same drug was found in Claire's system."
Grant looked at Renata through the far window.
And for the first time, the woman he planned to marry looked less like his future wife.
She looked like evidence.
Before they left the hospital, Lily caught Grant's sleeve.
"Dad?"
He bent close.
"Yeah?"
"Don't make me go home with her."
Grant's face tightened.
May you like
"You will never have to be alone with her again."
Lily studied him as if she were deciding whether promises from adults still meant anything. Then she nodded once. Emma saw the look and understood that Grant's hardest job had just begun.
