Chapter 20 - The House With Noise

A year later, the Callahan house sounded different.
Not quieter.
Louder.
Lily practiced piano badly and proudly.
She talked when she wanted to.
Sometimes she still went silent when she was afraid.
No one treated that silence like failure.
Emma came by every Sunday after nursing classes.
She wore scrubs now instead of a house uniform.
Lily loved that.
"You look official," she said.
"I am extremely official."
Grant rebuilt the foundation board with outside oversight and independent audits.
Nathan became trustee of Lily's shares alongside a professional fiduciary, so no romantic partner or single family member could ever control them.
The bathroom where Emma first found Lily was remodeled.
The straightener was gone.
The old vanity was gone.
Lily chose yellow tile and ridiculous green towels.
Grant approved everything.
One Saturday, Lily stood in front of the mirror while Emma braided her hair.
"Too tight?" Emma asked.
"No."
"Too hot?"
Lily smiled.
"There is no hot thing."
"Exactly."
Grant leaned in the doorway.
For a second, he remembered the smell of burned hair.
The hospital.
Claire's voice coming from dead phones and hidden recorders.
The worst year of his life.
Then Lily looked at him.
"Dad, stop making the sad face."
He laughed.
"I have a sad face?"
"A very dramatic one."
Emma nodded. "She's right."
Grant lifted both hands. "Outnumbered."
Lily hopped off the stool.
On the dresser sat a framed photograph of Claire.
Lily touched it gently.
"Mom would like the green towels."
Grant looked at the picture.
"She'd hate them."
Lily gasped.
Emma laughed.
Grant smiled.
"Which means she'd let you keep them."
Lily thought about that, then nodded.
Before dinner, she walked to the piano.
Emma sat on the sofa.
Grant stood by the window.
Lily placed her hands on the keys.
Her first notes were shaky.
Then steadier.
And she sang.
Not loudly.
Not perfectly.
But clearly.
The house that had once taught her silence filled with her voice.
Grant closed his eyes.
He did not hear a victim.
He heard his daughter.
Alive.
May you like
Safe.
And finally certain that when she spoke, somebody would listen.
