Chapter 18 - Claire's Last Recording

Lily led Grant to the old craft room.
Behind a row of picture books sat a wooden memory box Claire had made with her.
Inside was a tiny voice recorder.
"Mom said this was for after the bad people were gone," Lily said.
Grant's hands shook.
He pressed play.
Claire sounded tired.
But peaceful.
"Grant, if you're hearing this, then either I was wrong about everything or I was right about enough."
Lily sat beside him.
Claire continued.
"I need you to know I was afraid to tell you the full truth because every time I named someone you trusted, you defended the history you had with them. Simon knew your father. Margaret helped raise you. Renata knew exactly how to make herself useful."
Grant closed his eyes.
"That doesn't make you cruel. It makes you human. But humans have to correct themselves."
Emma stood at the doorway, listening.
Claire's voice softened.
"If Lily stops talking, don't chase her words. Make the room safe enough that they come back."
Grant looked at his daughter.
She squeezed his hand.
"And if Emma Torres is still working there, trust her instincts. She notices what powerful people ignore."
Emma froze.
Grant looked back at her.
Claire had known her only as a weekend staff member then.
Emma wiped her eyes.
The recording continued.
"Do not turn this house into a museum for me. Let Lily laugh. Let her make noise. Let someone burn dinner. Let the curtains get dirty."
Lily giggled.
Then Claire said:
"And Grant... love is not believing someone because you love them. Love is being brave enough to look when something feels wrong."
The recording ended.
For a long time, no one moved.
Then Lily said, "I want pancakes."
Grant laughed through tears.
"At ten at night?"
"Mom said make noise."
Emma smiled.
"Hard to argue with evidence."
The next morning, Ruiz called.
"Trial date is set."
Grant looked at Lily eating pancakes at the kitchen island.
"Does she have to be there?"
"No. We have enough without putting her through that."
Grant exhaled.
Then Ruiz added:
"But Renata wants to make a deal."
"For what?"
"She says she'll testify against Margaret if prosecutors reduce the charges tied to Claire."
Grant's voice went cold.
"Claire doesn't get a reduced death."
After the recording, Grant carried the little device to Claire's photograph and set it beside the frame.
"I finally heard you," he whispered.
Lily stood beside him.
"She knew you would."
Grant looked down. "How?"
May you like
Lily shrugged. "Because she kept leaving stuff everywhere."
Emma laughed so suddenly she had to cover her mouth. Grant laughed too. The sound felt almost disloyal until he remembered Claire had specifically asked for noise.
