Chapter 17 - The Crash Recorder

The recovered crash recorder contained forty-three seconds of audio.
Grant listened once.
He could not listen twice.
Claire's voice was weak.
"Lily? Lily, answer Mommy."
A child's cry.
Then a car door opened.
Renata's voice.
"Get the girl."
Simon answered, "Claire's alive."
Renata said, "Then call from the road."
Claire whispered, "Please..."
The recording ended.
Grant left the room and was sick in a trash can.
Emma stood nearby but did not touch him until he reached for her hand.
"She was alive," he said.
"I know."
"They left her."
"I know."
"Lily heard it."
Emma squeezed his hand.
"And Lily survived it."
The evidence transformed the case.
Renata and Simon were charged in connection with Claire's death, along with kidnapping, child endangerment, conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction.
Margaret faced separate conspiracy and financial-crime charges.
Dr. Vale agreed to cooperate and lost his medical license.
But the emotional damage did not disappear when charges were filed.
Lily had nightmares.
Some days she spoke.
Some days she did not.
No one forced her.
Dr. Benson returned to therapy sessions.
Emma sat in on the first only because Lily asked.
Benson said, "You don't owe anyone words."
Lily looked at Emma.
"Even Dad?"
Grant, sitting outside the open door, heard it.
Benson smiled.
"Even Dad."
Grant nodded through tears.
That night, Lily walked into his study.
"Dad?"
"Yeah, sweetheart?"
"Mom tried to tell you."
Grant looked down.
"I know."
"Are you mad at her?"
"No."
"Are you mad at you?"
He almost lied.
Then remembered Claire's recording.
Don't waste time hating yourself.
"Sometimes."
Lily climbed into his lap.
"Mom wouldn't want that."
Grant smiled sadly.
"You sound like her."
Lily rested her head on him.
May you like
Then whispered:
"There's one more recording."
