Chapter 12 - The Man in the Car

Police found Simon's car abandoned beneath an overpass.
There was blood on the seat.
No Simon.
His phone lay smashed on the pavement.
Ruiz believed he was injured but alive.
Grant believed Renata knew where he was.
Then Emma received a call.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
"Hello?"
A man's voice whispered, "Emma Torres?"
"Who is this?"
"Simon Hale."
Emma stood.
"Where are you?"
"Don't tell Grant until I finish."
"I'm putting you on speaker."
"No. Listen. Renata thinks I have Claire's last recording. She's wrong. I gave it to someone else."
Emma's pulse jumped.
"Who?"
"Lily's speech therapist."
Emma froze.
"Dr. Benson?"
"Claire trusted her."
A noise sounded on Simon's end.
"I have to go."
"Wait. Why are you helping now?"
He laughed weakly.
"Because Margaret tried to have me killed."
The line cut.
Emma immediately told Ruiz.
They went to Dr. Helen Benson's office.
Benson locked the door behind them.
"Claire came here the week before she died," she said. "She left an envelope and told me not to open it unless Lily spoke again."
Grant's throat tightened.
"Lily spoke yesterday."
Benson retrieved a sealed envelope from a locked cabinet.
Inside was a small recorder.
Claire's voice began:
"Lily saw something she cannot explain. If she stops speaking, do not force her. Silence may be the only thing that makes her feel safe."
Grant closed his eyes.
Claire continued.
"The night Simon came to our house, Lily saw Renata put powder into my tea."
Emma's chest tightened.
"And Claire knew?"
The recording answered.
"I pretended to drink it. I poured it into a sample jar. If I die before I deliver it, Helen knows where it is."
Benson went pale.
"I never got that sample."
Then Lily, who had come with a child advocate, whispered from the doorway:
"I know where Mommy put it."
Dr. Benson watched Grant after Claire's recording ended.
"Children sometimes stop speaking because adults make truth feel dangerous," she said.
Grant looked toward Lily.
"Can that be fixed?"
May you like
"Not by demanding speech. By proving that truth is safe here now. Every day. Over and over."
Grant nodded. He had wanted one grand act that could repair everything. Benson was telling him it would be a thousand small ones.
