Chapter 11 - The Voice in the Meeting
"Brooke, come home."
"No."
"You are upset."
"I am informed. There is a difference."
His jaw tightened.
Before leaving, Charles looked at Leah.
"You think you are exposing a system. You are destroying a hospital that serves thousands of people."
Leah answered, "If the hospital only works when nobody asks who gets moved, then somebody already destroyed it."
She had been staying with her sister outside the city.
She brought a tiny digital recorder.
"I started recording staff meetings after Alicia's transfer," she said. "I thought I was protecting myself."
Rachel asked, "Did you record the transfer night?"
"Not the night. The review meeting two days later."
They listened in Elliott's study.
Grant Voss spoke first.
There will be no written discussion of donor access tied to transfer decisions.
A nurse objected.
A patient was moved. We need to document why.
Then Corinne's voice.
You document clinical capacity. Nothing else. Crown Access is a contractual framework, not a medical instruction.
Another voice asked:
Then why did Charles call Grant before the transfer?
Silence.
Corinne replied:
Because donors call. That is not a crime.
Naomi paused the recording.
"Listen to the next part."
Grant said:
We need everyone aligned. The Moreno chart will show transfer accepted due unavailable specialty capacity.
A nurse answered:
But specialty capacity became available eleven minutes later.
Corinne's voice went flat.
Then your timestamps need context.
Leah looked at Rachel.
"That sounds like telling them to change the record."
"It sounds bad," Rachel said. "A prosecutor will decide what it proves."
The recorder continued.
A quieter male voice spoke near the end.
Edward wanted this program dead.
Grant answered:
Edward is dead.
Corinne said:
And the continuation is signed.
Elliott went still.
"Play that again."
Naomi did.
And the continuation is signed.
Eleven days before Edward's death, he ordered the program canceled.
After his death, a continuation appeared bearing his signature.
Leah whispered, "They knew."
Rachel's phone buzzed.
She read the message and looked up.
"The handwriting examiner finished the preliminary review."
Elliott's face tightened.
"And?"
"Your father's signature was stamped."
Naomi exhaled.
Rachel continued.
"But the initials approving use of the stamp belong to someone else."
"Who?"
Rachel turned the report around.
