Chapter 12 - Evelyn's Initials

Evelyn did not deny the initials.
She sat in Leah's living room with both hands folded in her lap.
"They are mine."
Elliott looked devastated.
"You approved the stamp?"
"For donor thank-you letters."
"After Dad died?"
"For six weeks. There were hundreds of acknowledgments already drafted. Grant told me the signature stamp was standard for closing them out."
Rachel slid the Crown Access continuation across the table.
"Did you approve this?"
"No."
"Your initials appear on the authorization sheet."
Evelyn leaned closer.
Her face changed.
"That is my handwriting."
Leah stared.
"Then how can you say no?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"Because Grant brought me a stack of documents after Edward's funeral. Insurance renewals. Vendor authorizations. Board notices. I initialed where he marked."
Elliott stood.
"You signed without reading."
"My husband had been buried four days."
"And they used your grief."
"Yes."
The word came out barely audible.
Evelyn said, "I helped them."
Rachel corrected her gently.
"You may have enabled them. That is not the same as knowing their purpose."
"Tell that to Alicia Moreno."
Evelyn looked at her.
"I kept telling myself donor access meant nicer rooms, faster paperwork, private entrances. Things I thought were harmless because nobody said who paid the price."
Then Evelyn reached into her bag.
"There is one more document."
It was a consulting invoice from Blake Strategic Legal to the Sutton Foundation.
Project: Crown Continuity.
Amount: $480,000.
Approved by Grant Voss.
Paid two weeks after Edward's death.
Elliott stared.
"For what work?"
"There is no description."
Rachel photographed it.
Then Leah's phone rang.
Alicia.
"Leah, are you home?"
"Yes."
"Turn on Channel Eight."
The television showed Corinne Blake walking into a press conference beside Charles Lang.
Corinne stepped to the microphones.
"Today we are releasing evidence that Leah Sutton attempted to solicit a private financial settlement in exchange for withholding stolen patient records."
Leah stood.
"What?"
Corinne held up a printed email.
It appeared to come from Leah's account.
PAY ALICIA MORENO AND THIS NEVER GOES TO THE REGULATOR.
Leah whispered, "I never wrote that."
Elliott looked at Rachel.
Rachel was already reaching for her phone.

Then Corinne said the one thing that made Leah's stomach drop.
"We have metadata proving the message came from inside the Sutton residence."
