Chapter 16 - The Archive

Leah did not see the flash drive again for nine hours.
By then, her daughter had been born.
Nora Sutton arrived at 3:42 a.m., furious, healthy, and loud enough to make Leah laugh through tears.
Elliott held the baby against his chest and cried without embarrassment.
"She has your mouth," he said.
"She is six minutes old."
"Still."
Then morning came.
Rachel entered quietly.
"I can come back."
Leah looked at her.
"You have the face."
"What face?"
"The lawyer face that says congratulations but also federal evidence."
Rachel smiled despite herself.
"The flash drive is real."
It contained six years of Crown Access logs.
Donor requests.
Bed holds.
Emails between Charles Lang and Grant Voss.
Legal memos from Corinne advising them never to describe donor preference as clinical priority.
And one spreadsheet tracking "displacement risk."
Leah felt cold.
"They knew patients could be displaced."
"Yes."
"Corinne knew."
"Yes."
"Then why did she keep this?"
Rachel sat down.
"Insurance. Maybe conscience. Maybe both."
Charles Lang's voice:
If there is no bed, make a bed. We did not give twenty million dollars to hear capacity excuses.
Grant answered:
Then someone has to transfer.
Charles:
That is what transfer agreements are for.
Corinne:
Do not say that again with me in the room.
Charles laughed.
You wrote the agreement.
Corinne replied:
I wrote donor access language. I did not tell you to move unstable patients.
Grant said:
You told us to protect the promise.
Silence.
Then Corinne:
I told you to manage legal exposure.
Leah looked at Rachel.
"She is guilty of plenty, but that sounds like she knew they crossed further than she intended."
"Intent will matter. So will what she did after she knew."
It clarified her.
At noon, Detective Ellis called.
Grant Voss had been arrested on charges tied to evidence tampering and cyber intrusion.
Peter Shaw had begun cooperating.
Charles Lang was under investigation.
Then Rachel looked at the final folder on the drive.
"Leah."
"What?"
"There is a file named EDWARD SUTTON."
Elliott came closer.
Inside was a recording dated three days before his father's death.
Edward's voice said:
If they will not end Crown Access, I am taking it to the board myself.
May you like
Then another voice answered.
Evelyn's.
