Chapter 13 - The False Email
Miles Chen found the answer in forty-three minutes.
The email had come from the Sutton residence.
But not from Leah's computer.
"It was sent through the old home automation server," he said.
Elliott stared at him.
"The same system Corinne's legal account accessed?"
"Yes."
Rachel leaned over the logs.
"Can you prove who logged in?"
"The session used BLAKE-LEGAL credentials."
Leah let out a breath.
"So we can destroy the accusation."
Miles did not look relieved.
"There is a problem."
"Of course there is."
"The login came from a device connected to the house Wi-Fi."
Elliott's expression changed.
"Meaning someone was here."
"Yes."
One temporary worker carried a laptop bag.
His face was partly hidden.
Naomi recognized him.
"That is Peter Shaw."
"Who?" Leah asked.
"Grant Voss's former IT manager at Arbor Crown."
Detective Ellis issued a warrant.
His laptop contained remote access tools, cloned credentials, and drafts of the fake email.
It also contained a folder labeled MORENO.
Inside were photographs of Alicia's apartment, Mateo's therapy center, Naomi's home, and Leah leaving her obstetrician.
Leah went cold.
Mara closed the laptop.
"This is now well beyond a records dispute."
Peter asked for a lawyer.
Then, after two hours, he asked for a deal.
He said Grant Voss hired him to "manage digital exposure."
He said Corinne gave instructions through encrypted messages.
He said Charles Lang paid the invoices through a consulting company.
"Cooperating witnesses lie too. We verify."
But verification came quickly.
Bank records matched two payments.
Server logs matched Corinne's access account.
The next morning Arbor Crown placed Grant Voss on leave.
Charles Lang resigned from the hospital board.
Corinne released a statement denying she directed illegal activity.
Leah should have felt victorious.
Instead she felt tired.
Then Brooke called.
"My father wants to settle with Alicia."
"That is Alicia's decision."
"No. Listen. He wants her to sign tonight."
"Why tonight?"
"Because tomorrow the hospital's internal audit goes to regulators."
Leah sat up.
"What is in it?"
Brooke's voice shook.
"Alicia was not the only patient moved."
"How many?"
